Nintendohas revealed that it will be increasing the prices of the originalNintendo Switch, theSwitch OLEDandSwitch Lite, along with physical and digital games, as well as accompanying accessories in Canada, according to a press release.
The moves are in response to changes to “market conditions,” with the company iterating that the recently releasedSwitch 2and its line of accessories and software won’t be subject to price increases. Currently, it is not yet known how much the prices will increase, though Nintendo states that on August 1, it will share more information on pricingon its Canadian website.
Monday’s news follows recent price increases throughout the globe on both consoles and games from other companies besides Nintendo, includingSonyandMicrosoft, all of whom cited largely the same reason as “market conditions.”
In These Regions, Gaming Has Gotten A Lot More Expensive
Just last month,Microsoft announced that both the Xbox Series X and S would receive a price increase, along with word that first-party games would shift to an $80 level. The result of the increases took the Series X from its $499.99 pricepoint to $599.99 in the United States, something gamers quickly began to rally against.
Those increases came just two weeks afterSony revealed that the price of the PlayStation 5 would be increased in several markets, including Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Not only did hardware see an increase, butSony also raised the price of its PlayStation Plus membership, too.
Most recently,in Brazil and Turkey, among other areas, the cost of digital PlayStation Store games also went up earlier than expected and in the face of extremely challenging times for gamers in those regions. In other words, Nintendo’s move follows what has been a series of larger moves as a whole when it comes to the gaming landscape.
