Despite thebacklash about its priceand the price ofMario Kart World, theNintendo Switch 2has been flying off the shelves. With the capability to run current-gen triple-A titles, and of course, a new Mario Kart, the Switch 2 is unsurprisingly selling by the truckloads. So much so that it has broken a 12-year record held by the PlayStation 4 in the United States.
In November 2013, the PS4 sold 1.1 million units in the US, the highest ever monthly video game hardware sales in US history. However, as of June 2025, that record has been taken over by the Switch 2 with 1.6 million units sold,according to Circana’s Mat Piscatella(viaGamesRadar). Nintendo’s console was also the highest selling video game hardware in terms of units and dollars.
Nintendo Switch 2 Breaks The PS4’s Record
The PlayStation 4 was undoubtedly one of the most popular consoles in terms of units sold. While it didn’t necessarily have the most attractive launch lineup, it performed very well in terms of sales. Besides Mario Kart World, and now Donkey Kong Bananza, the Switch 2 also didn’t have a huge first-party lineup, but we know how well the Mario Kart series sells.
This is supported by Piscatella later adding that 82 percent of the people who bought a Nintendo Switch 2 in June also purchased Mario Kart World, either as a separate physical game, or as part of the Switch 2 bundle. This doesn’t include digital sales, so the number could be even higher.
To show how popular third-party triple-A games are on the Switch 2, he also pointed out thatCyberpunk 2077, which was ranked 427th in May, jumped up to 18th in June due to its Switch 2 debut. you’re able to be sure thatElden Ring: Tarnished Editionwill follow a similar trend when it finally launches.
Other interesting stats shared by Piscatella revealed thatElden Ring Nightreignhas been the best selling video game in May and has retained its spot in June as well. It was followed byDeath Stranding 2: On the Beachin second place and Mario Kart World’s physical sales in third. Once again, digital and bundle sales were not accounted for.
