Summary
The Super Mario Bros. Moviesequel is less than a year away if it sticks to its announced April 2026 release date, and we still know very little about it. We don’t even know what it’s called, although that may have just changed thanks to a slip-up from NBCUniversal.
Like me, you probably assumed the next film in the series will just be called The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. The second game in the series had the same name as the first with a 2 on the end, so it makes sense. However, it looks likeNintendoand Universal will be jumping ahead to the SNES for the sequel’s name asthe latter revealed in its upfrontsthatthe follow-up film will be calledSuper Mario World.
The reveal was tucked away on a list of movies that will eventually come to Peacock after their theatrical runs, however, that list has quickly been updated so that any mention of Super Mario World has been scrubbed from it. The original version can still be seen thanks to the post below, courtesy of Wario64.
Did Universal Just Accidentally Reveal The Name Of The Next Mario Movie?
Super Mario World, Here We Come!
NBCUniversal’s quick removal of Super Mario World from the list means one of two things. Either that is the previously unrevealed name of the sequel and someone who didn’t know that wasn’t officially revealed information yet wrote the list, or that isn’t the name of the movie at all and that’s why it has been removed.
I hope Nintendo sticks to this naming convention and the third movie is calledSuper Mario 64.
My guess would be the former, and it seems fellow Mario fans agree with me. Those who have seen the Mario movie sequel will seemingly be called Super Mario World have already started to theorize why Nintendo has gone with that name over simply putting a 2 on the end of the first film’s name.
Many are hopeful that means the movie is going to lean on elements that were introduced to the series in Super Mario World. Spoilers for the credits scene in the first movie, but the character it teases makes the newly revealed sequel title make even more sense. The scene shows a Yoshi egg in the sewers, the cry of Yoshi’s dinosaur pal echoing out around the theater as the screen cuts to black.
Yoshi has been a staple of the Mario games for 35 years, and yes, you guessed it, the first game in which Yoshi made an appearance was indeed Super Mario World. If Universal is in a place where it can include the name in a rundown of upcoming movies, even if it was an accident, you have to think Nintendo will officially reveal it, and more about the movie, soon. The sequel is still slated to hit theaters on June 28, 2025.
