Nintendohas been involved in a bit of backlash ever since theSwitch 2launched, mostly down to practices which many believe are anti-consumer.It started charging $80 for its games, theunpopular Game Key-Cardsthat are despised by everyone that still cares about video game preservation, and the scrapping of Game Vouchers.
One of the biggest problems that people have with the Switch 2 is Nintendo’s ability to completely brick the system if it expects you’ve been up to something it deems naughty. For example, it was discovered shortly after release that Nintendo is able to brick your systemif you use third-party cartridges, whether that be for legitimate reasons or for piracy.
Nintendo Is Reportedly Bricking Switch 2 Consoles Over Third-Party Keys
It feels like an invasion of privacy, and kind of like you don’t even own your own system at times, with Nintendo hovering over you, ready to drop the axe should you dare to step out of line. That feels especially true if a post froma Reddit user called Character-Insect-775is to be believed, as they recently claimed that their Switch 2 was bricked shortly after they purchased and downloaded a game key from a third-party seller.
In the post, this Reddit user claims to have purchased a copy of Life is Strange: True Colors on June 19 from third-party key seller CD Keys. They apparently downloaded the game, and everything ran fine, until a week later when they logged in and found that they’d received an error code telling them their Switch 2 had been restricted.
After contacting Nintendo support, they were apparently told they had “multiple codes on my console” and that their ban was irreversible. To this day, they still have a Switch 2 that is essentially serving as a paperweight, with no comments from Nintendo on getting their console back or being sent a replacement.
Now, it’s important to note that with stories like these, they could be one-off events or just simply fake. However, if Nintendo is bricking Switch 2s over users buying third-party keys, then this is your warning to just buy from official sources until we can find out if Character-Insect-775 is the victim of an isolated incident.
