Nintendohas confirmed that it’s working on “various other projects” beyond the upcomingSuper Mario Bros. Moviesequel and live-actionLegend of Zelda, which could mean the Nintendo Cinematic Universe is actually happening.

For a very long time, Nintendo was extremely careful about doing anything with its franchises outside of video games. After the massive failure of the live-action Super Mario Bros. Movie, it seemed like we’d never see characters likeMarioand Bowser on the big screen again, which was thankfully proven wrong a few years ago.

The Super Mario Bros Movie

Illumination and Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. Movie was an unbelievable successand managed to gross more than one billion dollars worldwide during its theatrical run. That success quickly led to a live-action Legend of Zelda movie being announced, and even more movies and projects seemed inevitable.

Nintendo president confirms more movie projects are in the works after Zelda

Now we just have to hope that one of them is Smash Bros.

With that in mind, you probably won’t be surprised to hear that Nintendo is indeed working on more projectsoutside of the already announced Mario Bros. Movie sequeland Legend of Zelda movie. As pointed out by Twitter user Genki_JPN, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa talked about the possibility during a recent shareholders meeting.

During the meeting,Furukawa was asked whether Nintendo is considering making more “visual content” based on its franchises. In response, Furukawa noted that the company is still looking to expand on “the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP”, and that it’s working on initiatives outside of its video games.

The so-called “visual content” is one such area where Nintendo is looking to expand, which leads Furukawa to confirm that “various other projects” beyond The Legend of Zelda movie are currently being worked on. The Nintendo president couldn’t talk about any of them right now, but at least we know that they’re in some kind of development.

We are taking a proactive approach where Nintendo itself is deeply involved in production and makes investments as needed. This approach allows us to maintain a strong commitment to the quality of the final product. Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond The Legend of Zelda movie at this time, we are working on various other projects. - Shuntaro Furukawa

That leaves it pretty open as to what Nintendo is actually working on, but it’s worth noting that Furukawa said “projects”, which could mean movies or TV shows.Still, considering all of the jokes about a Nintendo Cinematic Universe, it’s funny to know that it might one day end up being a reality.
