Nintendo Switchowners have been able to buy vouchers that can be used to buy new, full-price games for the console for years, but sadly, those days are about to come to an end. Nintendo has announced plans to discontinue its Switch Game Vouchers, and that also means any you’ve been holding onto now have an expiration date.

Nintendo confirmed that its Switch Game Vouchers are being discontinued across multiple social media platforms on Thursday morning, but they’re not gone yet.You will still be able to buy the Game Vouchers up until July 27, 2025.You won’t have to use them right away either, as the vouchers will remain redeemable for 365 days after the date you bought them.

The Nintendo Switch Game Voucher era is coming to an end

Spend them now before it’s too late

That applies to any Switch Game Vouchers you already own, by the way.The vouchers expire after 12 monthsso if you’ve been sitting on any, waiting for the perfect Switch game to come along, you might want to check if they’re still valid. As far as I can tell, if you wait too long to use them, they simply become useless. No refund, and knowing Nintendo, no listening to your pleas for a second chance.

You can use these vouchers on pre-orders, by the way, which means you can use one to buy the Switch version of Pokemon Legends: Z-A. That means missing out onthe Sitting Cutie pre-order plush, though, as that’s a Pokemon Center exclusive.

Considering how infrequently first-party Switch games go on sale, even now that the Switch 2 has been released, Nintendo’s Game Vouchers have been one of the better deals in gaming for the past six years that no one ever really talks about. They have to be bought in pairs, and a pair costs $99.98, but those vouchers can then be used to buy two full-price Switch games.

Games likeSuper Mario Odyssey,The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, andMario Kart 8 Deluxelaunched at $60 and have pretty much stayed that way ever since. However, if you buy them using Game Vouchers, you can technically get them for $50 each. It’s not the biggest discount, and you have to commit to buying two games to get it, but it’s better than nothing.

Before you get any bright ideas,Game Vouchers cannot be used to buy Switch 2 games, so no using them to pick up heavily discounted copies ofMario Kart WorldandDonkey Kong Bananza. The vouchers may well be getting discontinued because Nintendo has plans to eventually replace them with Switch 2 Game Vouchers. That will likely depend on how successful the original vouchers have been, and if that is the plan, it will be a while before we see them. The Switch voucher system wasn’t rolled out until the console was two years old.
