Earlier this week,Nintendorevealedthat it would be increasing the priceof the originalNintendo Switchin the United States, citing “current market conditions.” The movefollows a previous price hike that took place in Canada due to the same reasoning.
Following the announcement, prices were revealed, including for the Switch OLED, with it now costing $399.99or just $30 less than what it would cost to get a brand-newSwitch 2. But that’s not all that’s been impacted,as Amiibo have gone up from $16 to $20, with double packs costing players even more.
The new changes have now put Amiibo collectors at a crossroads, with many debating whether it’s worth it to continue the hobby.
Amiibo Are A Fun Novelty, But The Price Might Be Too Much For Some
Taking to Reddit, Amiibo fans shared their frustrations, along with their plans moving forward when it comes to the cute little figurines of some of Nintendo’s most iconic characters.
“Nah, I’m officially done collecting Amiibos,“one collector wrote in response. “Terrible. “Hopefully these are going to rot in clearance departments,“another fan wrote.
That particular user might be onto something,as the infamously expensive Street Fighter 6 Amiibo were spotted on clearance racks after low sales, so other figures could follow suit down the line.
Beyond the frustration with the price, others were upset about how quickly things shifted from one day to the next, as the figures were their original price as late as yesterday. “Literally yesterday, they were 15.99 on Nintendo’s website!”
“Yeah… I’m gonna stick with Amiibo coins and cards,“one user shared. “The price Nintendo wants is way too high for such an extremely limited display piece. Can’t even use most of them for anything outside a handful of games, most of which are in SSB. Not at all worth it.”
In perhaps the most stunning comment, one collector wrotethat these new hikes could “lead to the death of the line.” That would be an unfortunate end to what started out as a neat way to showcase one’s fandom.
