It’s no Spectres-only secret thatBioWarehas had a rough go at things for quite some time.Anthemdidn’t go as planned,Mass Effect: Andromedadidn’t either, andDragon Age: The Veilguardmissed sales expectationsby 50 percent, which undoubtedly contributed toa major company restructuringand - alas -multiple layoffs.
In the wake of this latest state of affairs, all eyes have been on the next installment in the perennially popularMass Effectfranchise. It’s been years since a fifth mainline entry in the galactic saga was announced, but if the curious wording in a recent job posting is to be taken at face value, we may be getting more than just the one fresh space-bound adventure.
More Effect
Spotted by eagle-eyed fans and brought to our attention viaPCGamesN, BioWare is looking to hire a Lead Level Designer who will “drive vision and shape world spaces through all stages, from early prototyping to final polish.” Normal enough stuff. But earlier in the listing, the text states something more eyebrow-raising:
“The studio is developingfuture game experiencesfor the Mass Effect franchise.”
Does this suggest thepossibilitythat BioWare has more than one Mass Effect chapter in the works? It sure does. Is it instead possible that whoever wrote the job description didn’t really dwell on the particulars, or simply wanted to call attention to the fact that any prospective role helping to develop a Mass Effect game might lead to continued work on potential sequels or spinoffs? Yep.
In other words, we shouldn’t read everything into this. What wecando is simply entertain the notion that there are multiple Mass Effects en route. I strongly doubt they’d all be big-scale productions; Mass Effect 5, or whatever it ends up being called, would be the headline release while smaller projects like mobile games, future ports, or what-have-you might follow suit.
It’s all speculation, but speculating’s half the fun of waiting for upcoming games in beloved franchises. If BioWare is all-in on the IP right now,and by all accounts it is,then building it in several directions is a sensible enough approach. We’ve got that TV show, too…
