While most people are currently playing the recently releasedNintendo Switch 2—over 3.5 million people and growing, to be precise— there is a certain subset of gamers that are going back to the classics via theNintendo Entertainment System (NES), which dates back to the mid 1980s.
As first spotted by Nintendo Everything, 3dSen, a first-of-its-kind emulator that allows gamers to play NES games in 3D, has received its full 1.0 release after being in development for over a decade. More than 100 games are supported, including some bonafide classics, like Super Mario Bros. 3 and Donkey Kong, making it a must-try for hardcore retro fans.
3dSen Is More Than Just An Emulator, Though That’s Its Biggest Selling Point
According to the emulator’s Steam description, 3dSen is a “passion project” that goes beyond nostalgia to let gamers see classics in a new light.
“Whether you’re jumping back into old favorites or discovering hidden gems for the first time, 3dSen offers a fresh way to experience retro magic across every genre: platformers, RPGs, shooters, beat ’em ups, puzzlers, and more.”
That said, beyond the 100-plus supported games, features like Quick Save, Rewind and Custom Cover Art are also part of the package, which sells for $14.99,but is currently on sale for $10.49.
“Missing some absolutely key games, but I’m not gonna lie, (I) had a huge smile on my face the whole time,” one user wrote in their review. “I hope it gets more content…and some game genie support!”
Other reviews echo much of the same sentiment, though a lone straggler negative review points to the limited number of games, with a suggestion to check out the list before committing to a purchase, just in case there’s nothing that piques your interest.
For those interested in the 3dSen project,Nintendo Everything has compiled a list of the currently supported games, which spans first-party to third-party with some interesting licensed stuff in-between. Either way, it seems like a rather interesting take on the tried-and-true formula of emulating games.
