Final Fantasymight well beMagic: The Gathering’s most popular crossover yet, withits Secret Lairs selling out in less than two hours. What appears to have flown under the radar is a very special, very rare promo card handed out last weekend whose artwork has been designed to align perfectly with a card from a completely different TCG.
Even though Final Fantasy’s foray into Magic has only just begun, the series has had a TCG of its own for years. The Final Fantasy TCG has been receiving more attention than ever thanks to the MTG crossover, particularly whennew Zack and Cloud decks were releasedand some Final Fantasy fans learned of the TCG’s existence.
Seizing on the opportunity to forge even more synergy between MTG and the Final Fantasy TCG, connecting cards were created, one for each, featuring Alphinaud and Alisaie fromFinal Fantasy 14. MTG has a Swords to Plowshares card featuring Alisaie, while the Final Fantasy TCG has an Alphinaud card that is effectively the mirror image of MTG’s Alisaie artwork.
MTG’s Final Fantasy Crossover Is So Big, It’s Spilling Over Into Other TCGs
Good Luck Getting Your Hands On These, Though
That alone would be a pretty cool connection, but there’s a little more to it than that. If you look closely, you’ll see the top of a Moogle’s head at the bottom of each card. Not only does the Moogle’s head crossover into each card, but so does the pompom on the end of the iconic creature’s antenna. When you line up the pompom, the artwork joins up, and the two cards effectively become one.
It’s a very cool detail, and after the cards were handed out during MagicCon in Las Vegas over the weekend, the connected cards are starting to appear in the wild. Attendees at this year’s MagicCon who participated in any side events that featured Final Fantasy MTG cards were given the promo cards. There will be a second opportunity to add them to your collection, but there are a couple of pretty significant caveats.
The only other confirmed event at which the cards will be given to attendees is this weekend’s Magic: Spotlight, which is taking place in Japan. Not only will you have to make your way to Japan to get the cards, but the Swords to Plowshares MTG card will be in Japanese.
The cards might be available at future Final Fantasy TCG events, but that is yet to be confirmed.
Even though the Alisaie and Alphinaud cards are arguably harder to come by, they likely won’t be the most expensive Final Fantasy cards you can find right now. The golden foil version of the Traveling Chocobo card, of which there are only 77,has already sold for $40,000.
