Mortal Kombat 2(the movie, not the game) might not be out yet, but producer Todd Garner is already teasing a sequel and even potential spin-offs.

“There are plans going forward… other characters who aren’t in this movie, characters that may come back,” Garner said in an interview with FutureBoyWho2 (viaMaxBlizz).“If we’re allowed to do further movies — hopefully this one does well enough — there’s a chance to do other things; spin-offs, another sequel to propel the story, bring in different characters, and evolve the characters that we already have.”

[Mortal Kombat 2 is] not intended to be the end of the franchise.

Look no further than Kano, who Garner said will finally get his signature metal plate, and Scorpion/Bi-Han, who will receive a much deeper focus going forward. But beyond that, we don’t know much about future plans — what characters might receive spin-offs, or what a hypothetical Mortal Kombat 3 would look like. But with MK2 yet to release, and still several months to go, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

There Are Plans Even If Mortal Kombat 2 Isn’t Well-Received

Obviously, Mortal Kombat 3 is a lot less likely to happen if Mortal Kombat 2 doesn’t do well — that’s sequel 101. But even if the movie is a dud with audiences, Garner won’t be dissuaded, and promises to be open with whatever criticism the studio faces.

“However this movie is received by the public en masse, we’ll make adjustments and we’ll take that feedback,” he explained. “That’s what’s great about this. We can interact with each other, and we’re listening and we’re gonna take that feedback in… so that it’s enjoyable for everybody.”

Already, it looks like we’re seeing that philosophy in action with Mortal Kombat 2. There are murmurs that Cole Young, the incredibly controversial protagonist of the first movie, won’t last very long in the sequel, andgiven his noticeable absence in the trailer, it looks like the rumours are bang on. Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, seems to be stepping in as his replacement.
