After a lengthy countdown stream, the first full-length trailer forMortal Kombat 2was aired on the Warner Bros. YouTube channel. Mortal Kombat 2 is a direct sequel to Mortal Kombat (2021), once again directed by Simon McQuoid.

Rebel Without a Cage

The trailer centers around Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), a fan-favourite character who didn’t appear in the first movie because McQuoid felt the character’s presence would dominate the movie. Cage’s appearance was teased at the end of the first movie, as Cole Young departs to find Cage in preparation for the next eponymous tournament against Outworld. Greg Russo, who co-wrote Mortal Kombat (2021), envisioned the series as a trilogy, with the middle movie featuring the titular tournament.

There are several cast members reprising their roles, including Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang) and Lewis Tan (Cole Young), among others. Besides Urban, Tati Gabrielle is joining the cast to play Jade, and Adeline Rudolph to play Kitana. The movie is expected to expand upon the story of Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), emperor of Outworld.

The official trailer was preceded by ateaser trailer, which showed off Cage starring in one of his schlocky martial arts movies, entitled ‘Uncaged Fury’. Cage will be a pivotal part of Earthrealm’s upcoming battle against Outworld in the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament. It was established in the first movie that Outworld would be free to conquer Earthrealm should the latter lose the tournament.

The new trailer shows off Johnny Cage’s unlikely road to joining Mortal Kombat, complete with all the quips you’d expect from a modern-day Hollywood action movie. The movie casts him as an unlikely hero, given his lack of supernatural abilities. Cage doesn’t appear quite as cocksure as he does in the game series as a result.
