Summary
The 2021Mortal Kombatmovie failed to impress many, disappointing both critically and commercially. However, it seems that the studio has put that down to bad luck over the Covid period, as it’s ploughing ahead with a sequel regardless. And now, the crew know that they can’t mess fans around anymore.
In any interview withComicBook.com, screenwriter Jeremy Slater reassures fans thatMortal Kombat 2will actually revolve around the Mortal Kombat tournament. This comes after the first film mentioned it, butjust focused on some skirmishes before it kicks off.
Yes, Mortal Kombat 2 Will Show The Tournament Taking Place
“I was adamant that we had to have this tournament in the movie,” says Slater. “We can’t make people wait another movie and then be like, ‘Come back for the finale.”
He continues, explaining how he made it work in the story. “It was finding a structure to make the tournament as satisfying as you want it to be because this had years of build-up,” he says. “It’s figuring out who the individual matches are going to be, which characters do you pair off for maximum emotional impact, but also for the most dynamic fights. Then, also, what is the larger story you are telling between the tournament?”
However, he does share that it won’t all be about the fighting, with “just as much exciting stuff happening outside of the tournament”. He says that both arcs will keep moving the film along, but we’ll have to wait and see if he was able to strike the right balance.
Something else that will please fans is that, according to previous reports,Cole Young will have less of a role in Mortal Kombat 2. While this hasn’t been confirmed, it would address a major complaint about the first movie - that it revolved around an original character, not one from the games. So far, the marketing hasrevolved around existing characters, so it certainly seems that lessons were learned there.
