Alongside a startling amount of recent negative reviews,Monster Hunter Wildshas lost more than 98 percent of its record-breaking launch playerbase onSteam.
Without a doubt,Monster Hunter Wilds is one of the best games to have released in 2025 so far, as it managed to refresh the series' formula and expand on it in many ways. Of course, you’ll only agree with that statement if youhappened to play the game on a console instead of a PC.
By now it’s been well-documented just how badly Monster Hunter Wilds runs on PC, with incredibly poor optimisation that’s only gotten worse with each update. That annoyance reached a fever-pitch after the latest update, which caused amajority of the playerbase to negatively review the game on Steam in hopes of change.
At 18k Players, Monster Hunter Wilds Has Lost 99 Percent Of Its Launch Playerbase
That Number Keeps On Dropping Too
Monster Hunter Wilds' current “Overwhelmingly Negative” review status on Steam isn’t the only sign that players have had enough, though. As reported by Forbes, the game’s playerbase has taken a massive nosedivecompared to its record-breaking launch towards the start of the year.
If you take a look at the game’s charts on SteamDB, you’ll see that its peak was a monumental 1,384,608 players. That number has now dropped to a still respectable but noticeably lower concurrent player count of 17,920. That means that Monster Hunter Wilds currently has a bit more than 1 percent of its launch playerbase.
Of course, there are some factors to consider here. For starters, Steam is just one console that Monster Hunter Wilds is available on, and the one that’s struggling the most, so it makes sense that the count would be lower there. There’s also the simple fact that players move on from games and that they’re not always going to stick around when there’s nothing new to play.
For comparison’s sake,Wilds currently has fewer players than Monster Hunter World. It is tailing above Rise’s 9,000 concurrent playercount, though.
Still, even if you do take into account that 18k is a number that most games would be happy to have and that Wilds is suffering from success if you compare it to how it started, it’s still a noteworthy drop. It’s also one that Worlds is currently eclipsing, which goes to show just how annoyed the community is about the Steam version being so unplayable right now.
