MindsEye’s launch is not going very well at all, that much is clear. Many players are after refunds, as everything from the game’s performance to its story has proven to be a disappointment.

Now, MindsEye is showing us that not all publicity is good publicity. While it might be the most talked-about game in the industry, that isn’t translating into players, as itsconcurrent player count on Steamfell to just 260 over the weekend - its worst performance since launch.

Everywhere Leslie Benzies Interview

MindsEye’s Player Count Continues To Fall, Even During Its Launch Weekend

Typically, we’d expect the Saturday or Sunday after a game’s launch to be its busiest day yet, perhaps setting the concurrent player count record for years to come. That very much isn’t the case with MindsEye, which peaked at 3,302 concurrent players on launch day but has gone on to lose players ever since. Its highest concurrent player count in the past 24 hours was just 517.

It isn’t faring much better going into Sunday, as it sits at 395 concurrent players as of the time of writing. Of course, MindsEye also launchedPS5andXbox Series X/S, but the Steam stats give us a rough idea of how large the playerbase is.

This would be a bad start for any game, but especially one that was supposed to encourage fans to share user-generated content. These just aren’t the numbers you need to build a community that sustains the game after launch, leaving us with just a poorly reviewed action-adventure game.

It’s also surprising to see this come from Leslie Benzies, who was a producer at Rockstar from GTA 3 to GTA 5. MindsEye is the first game from his studio, Build a Rocket Boy, and his first game since GTA 5.

We’ll have to wait and see if MindsEye can recover from this poor launch. As it stands, it has the unfortunate title ofthe worst-reviewed game of the year so far, and also hasmostly negative user reviews over on Steam. The devs have said that they are"heartbroken" over the state of the game at launch, and are rolling out patches to fix the performance issues that have been encountered. We’ll just have to see if that’s enough to repair its reputation, and bring some more players in.
