Summary
MindsEyedeveloper Build A Rocket Boy’s co-CEO Mark Gerhard revealed that he thinks the negative reception to the game is being paid for, and it sounds like he’s hinting at blamingRockstar GamesandTake-Two.
Although it can largely feel like open-world games in the vein ofGrand Theft Autohave died off over the last few years (just look at the Saints Row reboot), there are some developers trying to capture that same magic. Perhaps the biggest example of this is MindsEye,a new open-world game from former GTA producer Leslie Benziesthat is releasing in just a few weeks.
MindsEye has been on a bit of a weird road since it was first announced, and that wasn’t really helped by a lack of gameplay and informationso close to release. Build a Rocket Boy tried to fix this recently with some previews from content creators and a new overview trailer, but the response hasn’t been all that positive.
“Not Wild When It’s True…”
Most of the recent showcases of MindsEye have been met with calls for it to be delayed due to bugs, orfilled with comments from people saying it “looks off” somehow. While it could just be because people aren’t gelling with what they’ve seen so far, Build a Rocket Boy’s co-CEO Mark Gerhard seems to think that the negative feedback is being paid for.
As reported by Eurogamer, Gerhard took to MindsEye’s Discord server and responded to a comment asking if he believed that “all the people who reacted negatively were financed by someone”, which he agreed with by saying “100 percent”. After being called out for this, Gerhard said, “Not wild when it’s true…”.
To make matters even more interesting, Gerhard later said that it “doesn’t take much to guess who”, which seems to be aimed at Rockstar or Take-Two. Considering MindsEye is clearly gunning for a similar vibe to GTA and comes from a former lead on the series, that seems to be what Gerhard is hinting at, although he didn’t confirm in the Discord and is unlikely to say exactly who he means.
Strangely,Gerhard almost instantly tried to move away from his comments, as screenshots from the Discord server show him saying that he “does NOT” know for sure that bots are being used for negative comments and dislikes.
