If you’re worried aboutMarvel Rivalsrunning out of ideas aftercommitting to adding a new character to the game’s roster every six weeks, don’t be. The team behind the game has been told by Marvel that they can choose whoever they like from the comic creators' ongoing run, and upon learning that, players have quickly been requesting some of the weirdest and most obscure heroes from Marvel history be added to the game.
Speaking withVideoGamer, Rivals director Guangyun Chen shed a little light on the restrictions put on NetEase when it comes to which heroes and villains from almost 100 years of comic book history the dev team is and isn’t allowed to use. The short answer is, everyone is on the table. I’m sure when NetEase makes a decision, the devs need to run it by Rivals before getting to work, but according to Chen, he and the rest of the Rivals team have free reign to add anyone from Marvel history to the hero shooter.
The Director Of Marvel Rivals Has Discussed The Limits On Which Characters They’re Allowed To Use
Good News: There Aren’t Any
You might think that opens the door to add Marvel’s biggest and most famous characters to a very popular video game, and on some level, it does, and so far it has been. However, Chen notes that he and the Rivals team want to “shine a light on some lesser-known yet equally fascinating characters.” They’ve demonstrated that already, featuring the likes of Jeff the Land Shark and Squirrel Girl alongside Spider-Man and Storm at launch.
As demonstrated by players who have already seen Chen’s comments, the Marvel cuts can get way deeper than Squirrel Girl if Rivals wants them to. AfterChen’s comments were shared on Reddit, people have been shooting their shots, and the weirdest and most popular deep cut people want to see on the Rivals roster one day is a Marvel hero called Big Wheel.
For those unfamiliar with Big Wheel, the wacky Marvel creation is exactly what it sounds like - a guy who rolls around in a giant wheel. Equipped with machine guns and rocket launchers, there might be something for NetEase to work with there. Big Wheel has a direct connection to Stilt-Man, a supervillain with really long legs that has also been requested multiple times on Reddit. The Wall also appears frequently in the replies. Yes, The Wall is just a guy that’s a wall. You all thought a Land Shark was a bold move, let’s see just how weird the Rivals team is really willing to get with it.
