Summary

IfMario Kart 8 Deluxe’s 200cc has always felt a little bit too fast for you, there’s a good reason for it, as a fan has suggested that it’s actually closer to 400cc.

We’re just a few short weeks away from thelong-awaited release of a brand-new Mario Kart game - Mario Kart World. Before we all wavegoodbye to Mario Kart 8 and the decade-plus of racing, fun, and frustration that it’s given us, it’s time to admit something to each other that we’ve all been afraid to say -200cc is way, waytoo fast.

While 50cc and 100cc feel like child’s play compared to the top dog 150cc,anyone who has played Mario Kart 8 will agree that 200cc is a massive leap in speedand the ultimate test of your ability. WhileNintendoclaims that it’s just a 50cc increase, it certainly doesn’t feel that way when you’re bouncing into every corner and flying off the map. As it turns out, there’s a very good reason for that.

Mario Kart 8’s 200cc Is Apparently Much Closer To 400cc, For Some Reason

Vindication!

As reported by Polygon,Twitter user and Mario expert MarioBrothBlog recently shared some crunched numbers for Mario Kart 8’s various speed options (thanks Redditor sammy_zammy) and came to the conclusion that all of our suspicions about 200cc have been “correct”. According to their data, which is based on the formula followed by other engine classes, 200cc is actually 415cc.

The charts suggest that200cc is actually 38 percent faster than the mode suggests it is, as indicated by the ratio between the top speed and class established by the other modes in the game. That’s a lot of numbers to try and take in at once, but it essentially means that 200cc is a total lie, and it’s not my fault that I’m so bad at it.

Yep, that’s definitely the reason why. No skill issues here, sir.

It’s not really clear why Nintendo has ramped up the speed so much while sticking to 200cc as the name, but it does make a lot of sense. Since the mode was added to Mario Kart 8 in 2015,fans have long speculated that it wasn’t the 50cc jump in speed that the name suggested, with many claiming that it was far too fast for its own good. Well, now we know, and I’m a little nervous about it appearing in Mario Kart World.
