With Destiny 2 seemingly going nowhere,Bungieprobably tied all its hopes toMarathon. The stylised extraction shooter was supposed to take the studio into the next generation, but it hit a major hurdle along the way.Bungie was accused of stealing an independent artist’s workand even featured it in several trailers and artwork.
Not just that, it seems like a lot of the game’s design philosophy was taken from the artist. While the studio blamed a former employee, a major rework was warranted and allmarketing for Marathon had been put on hold. This gave rise torumours that the game might be delayed or even cancelled. However, it seemsPlayStationhas confirmed that the game is still on track to launch this year.
Almost At The Finish Line
As spotted by RedditorCareless_Main3, in a recent business segmentpresentationfor Sony Entertainment Interactive, one of the slides (slide 27) mentions that Marathon is still set for a 2025 launch. The presentation is dated for June 28, 2025, and it was given by SIE CEO Hideaki Nishino and SIE Studio Business Group Hermen Hulst, so it’s unlikely that it’s a mistake.
As the slide in question reveals, Sony is drilling down on a number of live-service games from various studios. MLB The Show, Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Marathon, and even the recently announced Fairgames were all present on the slide – with Marathon under a ‘FY25’ (financial Year 2025) tab. However, no exact date was given for its launch.
In fact, Marathon features in the following two slides as well, with the second one saying the focus for FY2025 will be “Strong Early Engagement for Bungie’s Bold and Innovative New Title”.
The devs at Bungie are probably busy scrubbing every bit of the artist 4nt1r34l’s work from the game at the moment. It’s unclear how long it will take for development to get back on track, but it’s understandable if PlayStation decides to give it some more time to cool off.
