Summary

Magic: The Gathering’sbigFinal Fantasycollaboration is finally upon us, and as promised, Wizards of the Coast has revealed a bunch of Secret Lair drops to coincide with the release. Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over, Grimoire, and Weapon all went on sale today as part of MTG’s Summer Superdrop, but not everyone that wanted one has managed to snag one.

Yes, once again, Magic: The Gathering fans are having to deal with Wizard of the Coast’s dodgy website and frustratingly strange insistence on making Secret Lairs in limited quantities. Having gone on sale at 9am PT earlier today,it took just two hours and 20 minutes before all three Secret Lair drops had sold out, and if you didn’t get one during that timeframe, you’re not getting one at all unless you’re willing to pay scalping prices.

Magic: The Gathering Fans Are Left Disappointed Again As Final Fantasy Secret Lairs Sell Out In Two Hours

Unsurprisingly, those who have missed out are making their voices heard on social media, such as Twitter user Jfwong, who says they were left “empty-handed and disappointed” after attempting to grab some Secret Lairs, predicting that there’s “going to be a lot of heartache over this one”. Couldn’t have made a more accurate prediction if they tried.

It seems like being early wasn’t enough for some people,as one Twitter user called FoolhardyMTGclaims they couldn’t get anything despite “proceeding to checkout within 20 seconds of the sale starting”. Loads of people are reporting that they had to wait in line, only for everything to sell out before the bar had even reached fifty percent.

Just like with the Marvel Secret Lair drop last year, fans are now calling forWizards of the Coast to bring back print-to-demand.Nobody likes the process of buying Secret Lairs anymore, even if you are one of the lucky ones that can grab something, and almost every Secret Lair that has been available in limited quantities has been a disaster for customers.

Magic: The Gathering head designer Mark Rosewater claimed thathe was “passing along” complaints about the way Secret Lairs are sold these days- following the also disastrous Monty Python Secret Lair drop - but it seems pretty clear that he was fibbing, or that Wizards of the Coast just simply doesn’t care. It’s a shame, but Secret Lairs are now only for the diehards and the scalpers.
