In just one month’s time,Mafia: The Old Countrywill officially be released across allmajor consolesandPC, marking the first mainline Mafia game since Mafia 3 in 2016. Ahead of its release, studio Hangar 13 shared nine minutes of gameplay with IGN, including some stealth, driving and story elements.
That should be enough to drum up interest in the game. However, those who’ve watched the gameplay aren’t convinced, with many being disappointed at what they saw.
To Be Fair, Mafia Has Never Been A Revolutionary Title
“All I can say is I’m happy I didn’t pre-order,“one fan wrotein the official Mafia subreddit.Another added in part, “As expected, the gameplay is in no way revolutionary or new — the story and atmosphere will have to carry the game.”
Others in the thread pointed outhow the stealth animations and execution gameplay looked eerily similar to that of Mafia 3, a game that is nearly a decade old.
“Feels like a 7,“another user separately wrote. “I can see myself having a good weekend with this game but nothing I saw blew me away.”
For what it’s worth,Take-Two revealed back in May that the game would come in at a $49.99 price point, $30 lower than what most games are beginning to retail for. That alone should’ve been enough to give gamers an idea of what to expect come release.
“I don’t like being negative, but it looks like something out of 2013, and that’s an insult to some games that came out that year,“another player harshly wrote. The frustration is palpable, but it’s worth remembering that 2013 also gave us gems like Aliens: Colonial Marines and Saints Row IV, which aren’t exactly banner titles, either.
Other threads on Reddit shared many of the same sentiments, with the negativity largely drowning out those who are excited about playing the game. Ultimately, nine minutes of gameplay is just that … nine minutes.While Mafia: The Old Country won’t be a 60-hour romp, it’ll still have some length, making those nine minutes only a small representation of the game.
In other words, we’ll have to wait until next month to see if things are as “generic” as they seem.
