For many years, there have been comparisons betweenPlayStationand Xbox, and you can make arguments for either brand. One argument in favor of PlayStation systems is their collection of JRPGs. Each of Sony’s consoles has had numerous great JRPGs for you to enjoy.

After all, iconic series such as Kingdom Hearts and Suikoden got their start on PlayStation systems. Plus, many of the most iconic Final Fantasy titles have also been released on Sony hardware. All this begs the question of which PlayStation system has provided the most JRPG goodness? Here is all of them ranked on that basis.

For each console, the only JRPGs we’re taking into consideration are those that were initially released on the system. So, re-releases and backwards compatibility games don’t count. For example, Persona 5 Royal was released on the PS5, but it was already on the PS4 long before that, so it counts as a PS4 game. If a game is launched on two systems simultaneously, it counts for both.

There are plenty of good JRPGs you can play on the PS5. However, most of them were released on the PS4 first. In terms of JRPGs that are native to the system, the collection doesn’t have that much depth. In the PS5’s defense, the console hasn’t been around as long as the others, so it hasn’t had as much time to build up its catalogue.

That isn’t to say there aren’t any strong JRPGs on the system. After all, games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth, and Metaphor: ReFantazio were released on the system. There just isn’t enough of them.

Handheld systems and JRPGs have a strong history together. That said, the Vita’s offerings aren’t quiteas good as those of the PSPor perhaps even the Nintendo 3DS. The system features some solid games, including The Legend of Heroes: Trials of Cold Steel and Ys 8: Lacrimosa of DANA.

Overall, though, there aren’t quite enough A-tier JRPGs on the system. Plus, most of what did come out for it also released simultaneously on the PS3 or PS4, so it lacks big titles that truly feel like they were designed with the Vita in mind.

There is a lot to like about the PS3’s JRPG catalog. For starters, it has the brilliant duo of The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel and The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel 2. Both of these are fantastic and slightly underrated. On top of that, the original Persona 5 released on the system, as did Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch.

Unfortunately, though, the main Kingdom Hearts series skipped the PS3 generation, and it didn’t receive any ofthe best Final Fantasy games. The console could’ve done with one or two more big JRPG releases.

Anyone in the market for big-name JRPGs, then the PS4 has you covered. Its catalogue contains great entries in some of the most famous JRPG series, such as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Nier Automata. Also, with Metaphor: ReFantazio, you have a great new, original JRPG that could very well spawn a series.

So many iconic JRPGs were released during the PS4 era. As a result, some may even consider it the best console for the genre; however, the competition is tough, and there are a few systems that offer a bit more.

What do Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7, and Valkyria Chronicles 2 have in common? For starters, they are all excellent JRPGs that were released on the PSP. More importantly, upon release, they weren’t available on other systems.

These games were exclusive to the PSP for years. This level of exclusivity made the handheld console and the games feel extra special. Of course, the system has some excellent non-exclusive JRPGs, which help add depth to the already impressive collection.

One of the most beloved JRPG series ever got its start on the PS2, and that series is Kingdom Hearts. The first game in the Disney and Square Enix collaboration series was a PS2 exclusive. That isn’t the only incredible RPG that the console introduced the world to, either.

Final Fantasy 10, Persona 3, Persona 4, Suikoden 3, Dragon Quest 8, and more were released on the system. So, the PS2 is home toa range of original and unique JRPGs. For many, this is the era where they fell in love with the genre because it was hard not to.

The connection between PlayStation and JRPGs all started with the original PlayStation. This system introduced the world to the Persona series, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, and many more entries into the genre that people will remember forever.

Also, it houses a few of the greatest Final Fantasy games in FF7, FF8, and FF9. While the series was already fairly popular before these entries, the series grew significantly due to those three instalments. Therefore, the PS1 played a crucial role in the rise of Final Fantasy and the popularity of JRPGs in the West.
