A Minecraft Movie caused a bigger splash than anyone could have expected earlier this year, generating almost $1 billion at the box office and unleashing a tidal wave of memes on the world like no video game movie to have come before it. However, its time at the top of the 2025 Hollywood box office mountain has now come to an end.
That’s thanks to Lilo & Stitch. The latest inDisney’s series of live-action remakes took its sweet time - it’s been six weeks since its release - but it has finally come forMinecraft’s crown. The Disney remake’s worldwide box office total hit $972 million over the weekend (viaBox Office Mojo), moving it past the $954 million on which A Minecraft Movie’s cinematic run came to an end.
Neither is the highest-grossing movie of 2025 so far, by the way. China’s Ne Zha 2 fell just a few dollars short of making a staggering $1.9 billion

The reimagined version of Lilo & Stitch doesn’t only have money on its side, but also the critics and the fans.Its average review score on Rotten Tomatoesis significantly higher than Minecraft’s (71 percent vs. 48 percent), and its fan review score is seven points higher. That means,despite the critically panned live-action remake of Snow White, we’re almost certainly going to be getting more of these adaptations.
Snow White still managed to bring in more than $200 million at the box office, too, meaning it ranks higher than 28 Years Later and, more worryingly, Pixar’s Elio.
No one behind the Minecraft movie will be losing any sleep over this, of course. The success of the film was astounding, and that still applies. The $954 million it made at the box office comfortably makes it the second highest-grossing video game movie by quite some way., beatingSonic the Hedgehog 3by almost $500 million. Remember when Sonic 3 was the second most successful video game movie ever, Sonic fans? Those were a nice few months.
There will be more Minecraft movies,there’s going to be a fourth Sonic movie, but before either of those, there’s going to be a second Mario movie.The Super Mario Bros. Moviestands tall atop the video game adaptation pyramid and, despite Minecraft’s best efforts, is the only video game movie to have broken the $1 billion barrier at the box office.
The next Mario movie is still on track to his theaters in April 2026, so less than a year away. As far as we know,the sequel will be called Super Mario World, but Nintendo has yet to officially confirm that. It seems almost inevitable that within weeks of its arrival, it will have knocked A Minecraft Movie down to third in the video game adaptation pecking order, and hence knock poor Sonic 3 off the podium.
