Legokicked off an unlikely partnership withTransformersin 2022by releasing its impressive Optimus Prime set. The next logical step was Bumblebee, and you’d have assumed that after that, we’d get Megatron. Lego’s third Transformer set will indeed be a Decepticon, but surprisingly, it isn’t the most famous one.

Although its store page isn’t live, the first images of Lego’s debut Decepticon have been shared on social media, revealing thatthe next character from the iconic series to get the toy brick treatment will be Soundwave. Even though Megatron leads the Decepticons, Soundwave is very popular with Transformers fans despite his villainous ways, which might be why Lego has decided to go in this unexpected direction.

Lego’s next Transformers set will introduce Soundwave to the collection

The first-ever Lego Decepticon arrives on August 1 and will cost $189.99

Lego scaled things back for its Bumblebee build, which makes sense since he’s a smaller Transformer, but has ramped the piece count back up again for Soundwave. The set is 1,505 pieces, so just three pieces shy of Optimus Prime. That feels like something that was done intentionally. Sure, Soundwave’s arrival is a big deal, but Lego will want to boast that the Optimus set is the biggest one for as long as possible.

The Soundwave set will cost the same as the Optimus one, $189.99,and will also come with extras. Arguably better extras than Soundwave’s Autobot rival, as when the Decepticon’s build is complete, he will have his Transformer pets to aid him in battle.Mini builds of Laserbeak and Ravage are part of the set, and, just like Soundwave, it looks like they’ll be able to transform. Once transformed, they can be stored safely in Soundwave’s tape deck chest.

Even though Lego’s store page for Soundwave hasn’t gone live yet, we already know when the set will be available to buy -June 02, 2025. Its arrival might be an indicator that we’re about to start getting Lego Transformers sets at a steadier pace. We were made to wait two years between Optimus and Bumblebee, but it has only been a little more than 12 months since the Bumblebee set was released.

If and when there is a fourth, it will almost certainly be Megatron. There are other popular options, though, of course, if Lego wants to keep trying to be unpredictable. A Starscream set to level the Lego playing field for the Decepticons would be very cool, or if we’re getting another Autobot, I’d like to see Elita One from Transformers One join the Lego fight.

Lego Optimus Prime

Transformers' first Lego set is a big one. The Optimus Prime set is made up of 1,508 pieces and with 19 points of articulation, it can quite literally transform between its bipedal form and a truck. Also included are various accessories such as an ion blaster and a little plaque adorned with facts about Optimus Prime.
