Summary

Kingdom Hearts 4really seems to be pushing Sora into the modern era, as the latest batch of screenshots show that he’s somehow got himself a smart watch in Quadratum.

I’m not sure there’s ever been such a rollercoaster time to be a Kingdom Hearts fan. Just yesterday,Square Enix announced that it was cancelling Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link after years of developmentand seemingly nearly being finished. That gut punch was thenfollowed up earlier today with a brand new look at Kingdom Hearts 4, the first in more than three years.

Although the new look was clearly just a bandage over the Missing Link bullet hole,it did finally give us Kingdom Hearts fans something to drink in one of the series' biggest droughts. The new screenshots are full of interesting details (such as playable Mickey in what appears to be Scala ad Caelum), including one that suggests Sora is finally learning technology a little bit more.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Has Given Sora A Smart Watch As Part Of His Quadratum Design

Let’s Hope He Doesn’t Smash It Like He Did Hollow Bastion’s Computer

As pointed out by Twitter user and Kingdom Hearts sleuth churroz, the centrepiece of the new screenshots that shows Sora battling Heartless in Quadratum has an easy-to-miss detail. If you look closely at Sora in both the Japanese and English versions of the screenshot, you’ll notice that he’s now wearing a smart watch on his armthat wasn’t there at all in the first trailer and images for the game.

This suggests that the smart watch is a new addition to Sora’s design in Kingdom Hearts 4 that’s been added in the time since we last saw it, and could even have some sort of functionality in the game.Fans have suggested that it could possibly replace the Gummiphoneor be integrated with it somehow. Either way, it’s a little weird seeing Sora rocking such a modern accessory.

Speaking of accessories, I’ve seen some worry thatSora’s necklace has been removed from his HUD icon in Kingdom Hearts 4, but it seems to just be because it’s a little smaller when he’s in the real world.

While Nomura doesn’t tend to add something for the sak of it, it’s likely that the smart watch is just there to show that Quadratum is a representation of the modern world. As much as I love theory-crafting,it’s likely the same as Sora’s shoes being smaller Converses now- it’s just a little detail for his new look to show what kind of world he’s in.
