James Gunn’s rebooted DCU has officially begun viaSuperman, and it’s off to a flying start. The new movie has grossed $292 million so far in the US alone. Not only is that a very impressive number, but it also means it is already the highest-grossing Superman movie ever domestically, overtaking Man of Steel.
According to Box Office Mojo, Superman’s $292 million makes Gunn’s new movie the highest-grossing Superman movie ever, and it hasn’t even been in theaters for three weeks yet. The previous record has stood for more than a decade and was set by Man of Steel in 2013.Zack Snyder’s Superman movie ended its domestic run with $291 million.

Gunn’s Superman still has some work to do if it wants to become the highest-grossing Superman movie worldwide. Man of Steel pulled big numbers around the world and finished its run on $670 million. Gunn’s Superman has been more popular in the US so far, as even though it has already surpassed Man of Steel domestically, it has only just moved past the $500 million mark when accounting for all its ticket sales.
The only other Superman movie to earn more than $200 million at the box office was 2006’s Superman Returns. All four original Superman movies, which were released in theaters between 1978 and 1987, ended their runs with less than $200 million each. 1978’s Superman fell just short of $134.5 million, and every sequel after that earned less and less, up until Superman 4’s disappointing $15 million almost a decade later.
2025’s Superman will continue to bolster its box office numbers over the next few weeks, and there’s still a chance it moves past Man of Steel’s worldwide numbers. It also has some big earners to compete with in the 2025 rankings. It’s fourth domestically, with only Jurassic World: Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, and Lilo & Stitch making more in the US. It’s eighth worldwide with a few more blockbusters ahead of it, for now.
Superhero fans will be keeping a close eye on both Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps numbers, and so far,the movies are pretty much neck and neck. Superman made $220 million during its opening weekend, while the latest installment in theMCUmanaged $218 million. If Superman ends the year on more than Fantastic Four, it will be the first time the highest-grossingDCmovie has made more at the box office than the highest-grossing Marvel movie in a calendar year during which both have released new films since The Dark Knight in 2008.
