Out of the blue yesterday, Insomniac tweeted aboutSunset Overdrive—the energy-drink-chugging mutant love child ofDead RisingandTony Hawk’s Pro Skater.
And no, the studio isn’t celebrating the game’s anniversary. Sunset Overdrive was released exclusively for Xbox on May 06, 2025, and was ported to PC four years later on November 16. We’re still a few months out from its 11th birthday, which would be an odd number to highlight anyway. But don’t jump to any conclusions, Insomniac probably isn’t teasing a sequel.
Only a couple of days beforehand, it also posted about the “Low poly gloriousness” of the originalSpyro. It looks like the studio is just having some fun with its legacy. That hasn’t stopped fans from getting their hopes up, though, as you can find a pretty even spread of ‘remaster confirmed!?’ comments and people begging for a PS5 port. We probably won’t see anything of the sort, but it’s not as far-fetched as you might think.
Sunset Overdrive Might Be An Xbox Exclusive, But That Doesn’t Mean Anything
Insomniac wasn’t owned by PlayStation when it developed Sunset Overdrive, which is why it’s an Xbox exclusive. But it does own the rights to the IP. So, even though it was brought under the Sony umbrella in 2019, it can do what it wants with the series—creative director Marcus Smith even said in a 2021 interview that"there’s nothing really stopping us [from making a sequel] other than we have a lot of really exciting things in our future."
As per the leaked roadmap, we know that Insomniac was at one point developing a live-service Spider-Verse game and a Venom spin-off. They both appear to have been cancelled, but the studio is still working on Spider-Man 3, an untitled Ratchet & Clank sequel, and an X-Men game, alongside Wolverine. It’s hard to imagine the studio finding the time for Sunset Overdrive 2 between all those projects.
When badgered about a PS5 port last year, Insomniac simply responded, “We’re busy”. That being said, with so many Xbox games being ported to the platform and proving to be major hits, it’s no wonder that conversation has heated up again, only fuelled further by Insomniac’s random tweet. But the studio already has a stacked line-up, so unless someone else takes the reins, it’s worth tempering expectations.
