Among Usisn’t a scary game. It’s silly, it’s cute, and it’s a fun whodunnit multiplayer title where the chaos comes from lies and not knowing who to trust. The general idea is for everyone to play their role, complete tasks, and avoid being killed by the imposter, with emergency meetings to discuss suspicions, and voting to send someone out the airlock.
Among Us 3Dtakes that formula and puts us directly into the first-person perspective, making it into something refreshing, offering a whole new level of chaos and fear in the otherwise lighthearted game of murder.
Among Us VR first dipped into this format in 2022, but with VR having a much smaller audience, Among Us 3D is bringing that same experience to most players for the first time.
Things Were Suddenly A Lot Eerier
As much as the Among Us astronauts have become recognisable meme icons, it’s suddenly a lot more intimidating when one is standing right in front of you, with a blank stare and a potential intent to kill you. Or better yet, when there might be one behind you and you have no idea.
Getting lost in the corridors of the space station is creepy enough, but when you’re trying to complete tasks with your back turned and no top-down perspective to give you any warning of other players approaching, things feel more tense. I’ve never felt more vulnerable going around the back of Electrical, well and truly out of sight of just about everything.
Proximity Chat Only Makes It Even Better
While Among Us only used text chat during the meetings, most people would opt to use Discord or other third-party apps to make use of voice chat. With Among Us 3D, we now have fully integrated proximity chat, making those dark corridors and sneaky moments all the creepier.
Among Us VR also features proximity chat, and those with VR headsets can use them within Among Us 3D as with the VR version of the game.
There were times I’d see two people enter a room, hear their voices muffled as I carried on, and then, once it was quiet, I’d go to investigate and find the body of one of them. Similarly, I couldn’t think of a better way to stalk my prey than wandering the halls singing Take Me Home, Country Roads as I watch another player panic and begin running.
More than anything, however, it’s those quiet moments when you’re alone that really exaggerate the fear. Being somewhere on your own, doing your tasks, and not hearing or seeing anyone. You don’t know if others are nearby, you don’t know if they’re even still alive, and you don’t know who or where the imposter is.
It stings a lot more when you finally bump into someone, exchange a “Hey, man!”, before being stabbed in the gut.
