Let’s face it,MindsEyehad a cursed release cycle. Since MindsEye launched on June 10, fans have made it their mission to speak their mind on what they believe is wrong with it. Withabysmal critical review scoresand fans universally bashing the game for its performance and other issues, it’s one of the rare games that has united gamers (over universal disdain). However, anotherGTAdeveloper has come out in support of the game despite thenegative press.
Former GTA developer, Obbe Vermeij (who worked as a technical director at Rockstar North until 2009) has spoken out in support of MindsEye, saying that some aspects of gameplay are “top notch”. This is a rare bit of praise for MindsEye, a game developed by another former GTA lead, Leslie Benzies.
In a post on Twitter, Vermeij explained his reasoning, saying that he found the game to be surprisingly good. However, he does acknowledge its flaws, saying, “If they’d fixed the worst bugs and released at $40 it would have gone a lot better.”
MindsEye Could Have Gone A Lot Better, But At Least It Has This Fan
While defending Build a Rocket Boy’s debut game, Vermeij admits he only checked the game out because he knew some of the people at the company. He still has praise for the game, saying that the highlights include “cut-scenes, characters, story, acting and [the] general vibe”. Despite this, he does admit that the code does have issues and there are bugs present.
The issue with Vermeij’s analysis is that it’s rhetorical in nature. He suggests that if the title had launched at $40 (it launched for $60), and the team had worked out most of the worst bugs (it launched bug-riddled), it would’ve had a better chance. While the former GTA developer may have enjoyed MindsEye, the game has been universally panned by critics and fans. Thetop review on Steamfor MindsEye from July 5 reads, “I really wish I hadn’t gone past the 2-hour refund time. Kept trying to give this game a chance but it’s just absolutely terrible and not worth even playing for free.”
So, while some continue to defend Build a Rocket Boy, fans are still emptying the chamber into bad reviews of the game.
