Even in the original Death Stranding, the gathering of materials to build structures was very common. You needed vast quantities to build roads and other pieces of infrastructure. InDeath Stranding 2: On The Beach, these materials are even more important with even bigger pieces of infrastructure to restore.
While facilities around Australia will of course have plenty of materials to go around, they will dry up quickly once you get into the larger restoration projects. To that end, you’ll need to start relying on mines to give you those precious resources to rebuild Australia. However, getting these mines into the network and then moving those materials is a major undertaking.
How To Use Mines
Mines are introduced early on in Australia, and come in two forms -small mines, and large mines. Nice and simple. Smaller mines tend to be more isolated, give fewer materials, but also require less Chiral Crystals to create those materials. Large mines are the opposite, filling up large sections of the map, giving a massive amount of resources, but requiring quite a few Chiral Crystals to produce them.
Larger mines also tend to be connected to a monorailto allow the faster transport of these large number of materials.
Before you can begin mining, you must restore the mine itself. This is just like upgrading a structure or rebuilding a road. All you have to do is offer up the materials needed and it will be restored. If the mine is currently outside of the Chiral Network, you will have to provide all the materials yourself. If it is within, there is a chance it may be helped along in its restoration by other players.
Once a facility has been restored, you must offer it up Chiral Crystals to mine the materials in question. This process is instantaneous, giving you all the materials at once. You cannot give a partial amount to get less materials, either. It is all or nothing. This is the same for both large and small mines.
Mines will also produce materials naturally over time. Chiral Crystals just allow up to speed up this process.
What Kind Of Materials Are There At Mines?
Every mine offers a unique resource from those available in the game. These include:
Every mine produces a specific material. You cannot change what it produces, so if you want a guaranteed source of certain materials, you must find the mine that produces it first.
There are two mines for every materialin the game with the exception of Chemicals, of which there is just one. For most other materials, there will be both a small and large mine to give you a variety to choose from.
How To Transport Materials From Mines
Once you have received your materials from a mine, you’ll have to bring them somewhere. They’re not worth anything just sitting there, after all. How you do this is very dependent on where you actually are. And as obscenely strong as Sam is, he doesn’t have the space in his backpack nor the superhuman strength needed to transport this many materials with just his body.
For larger mines, there may be a monorail nearby. This will give you the ability to have the materials transported to your private locker at any other stationalong the track. This is a very fast way to move materials, but also lets you pack up hundreds of kilograms that might be impossible to move otherwise.
Monorails can also transport vehicles and regular cargoas well if you have a delivery to make along the way.
Without a monorail nearby, your next best option would be aPickup Off-Roader. While a Tri-cruiser can get you around quickly, it’s unlikely to be able to handle the materials from even a small mine, let alone a large one. The Pickup Off-Roader has a massive amount of cargo space in comparison, and even keeps them safe from Timefall during those longer journeys.
Other Information On Mines
Upgrading Mines
Mines already produce a massive amount of materials, but you can make them even better. Just like PCC structures, they can be upgraded. This allows them to produce even more materials per yield, all while taking the same amount of Chiral Crystals to produce.
Even better, because they are now built and within the Chiral Network, other players can contribute materials towards the upgrade process, making it even easier and faster to upgrade them.
Gathering Chiral Crystals
What you’ve probably noticed when using mines is thatthey ask for an obscene number of Chiral Crystalsfrom you, and there aren’t really any means of gathering more Chiral Crystals like there is for mines. So how do you handle this massive need for Chiral Crystals?
Really, the only means is to seek out BTs and defeat them. Every time a BT is defeated they will drop some Chiral Crystals. Otherwise, the only major source of Chiral Crystals is from around mines themselves. There will typically be a tar pool with plenty of Chiral Crystals insideit for the gathering.
Chiral Crystals also appear more commonly during Timefall, so keep your eyes open for any during your travels to stock up more quickly. We have adedicated guide on finding moreto help you out further.
