There’s always something dangerous lurking on the moons you visit inLethal Company, even if it doesn’t look like it. Even before you get into the facility and start gathering scrap, you can run afoul of the strange creatures that call the moons their homes if you aren’t careful.
If you see a large bird in the distance, complete with giant eyes staring at you from between the trees, you might have just come across the Giant Sapsucker. This bird normally keeps to itself, eating sap and caring for its nest and future hatchlings, but if you threaten its child, you’ll face its wrath.
Lethal Company iscurrently in Early Access on Steam, so the information below may be subject to change at a later date.
Where To Find The Giant Sapsucker
The Giant Sapsucker canonly be found on VowandAdamance, both of which areforested moonswith moderate climates, though it has anincreased spawn rate on Vow, similar tothe Forest Keeperandthe Bracken.
It is anOutdoor-only entity, and it and its nest canspawn all over the surface of the moonsave for the areas closest to the main facility, and it’llmost likely be near a group of trees, as they’repart of its behavior.
Giant Sapsucker Behavior
The Giant Sapsucker is atall, two-legged avian creaturethat resembles agiant woodpecker with large eyesand anextremely long beak, and canonly be found Outdoors.
There canonly be one Giant Sapsuckerat a time on a moon; it willalways spawn as soon as the ship landsand the day starts, and it will bepresent for the whole day, unlike creatures such as the Forest Keeper, which generally spawn in the evening unless it’s an Eclipse.
Giant Sapsuckersoccasionally go to sleep while sitting on their nest, signified by closed eyes and a soft whistling, and you may get much closer to them without triggering aggression if you crouch downand walk up.
Whenthey’re left alone, the Giant Sapsucker willstay passiveandalternate between nesting, sleeping, dancing, and peckingwhile stayingwithin a medium-sized radius of its nest, only making them athreat if you get too close for too longor someonetries to steal their eggs.
If you are noticed by one, you canback away to a safe distanceof around 20 steps. The Giant Sapsuckerwon’t enter its Enraged Modeand will goback to minding its business after a few moments, allowing you tostill safely transport scrapand move around itunless it’s spawned in an unfavorable location, such as near a Fire Exit.
A Giant Sapsucker willsquawk if you get too close, then stop and stare at you, and will also follow you until you get awayfrom their nest.
Aunique featureof the Giant Sapsucker is that itseggs also double as loot, with each one’s value tending torange between 20 and 45 Creditson average.
Everynest is guaranteedto have at leastthree eggs, making themfairly lucrativeif they spawn with higher scrap value, but you canonly hold one eggat a time andcollecting even one eggand keeping it willtrigger Enraged Mode, and the Giant Sapsucker willstay aggressive unless it’s killed, or youdrop the egg.
Since theGiant Sapsucker is primarily passive and is extremely powerful, you can let it kill off hostile enemies such asEyeless DogsandBaboon Hawks, which will attempt to attack it.
Enraged Mode
When somethingapproaches their nest, whether it’s a player or an entity, they willenter Enraged Modeand attempt tohunt down the nearest entitywhile pecking it to death. If you manage toescape into a facility or your ship, they will eventuallygo back to being passive.
Thelonger the Giant Sapsucker stays in its Enraged Mode, the faster and more damage it will do, so it’s best to avoid making it enraged at all costs unless you’re preparedand about to leave.
Whileenraged, the Giant Sapsucker’smovement speed is massively increased, and it caneasily outrun a playerwith zero weight, even if you’ve takenthe TZP-Inhalant. Theirattack damage is low, but they’llchew through your health in secondsthanks to their equallyrapid attack speed.
Giant Sapsuckersalso enter Enraged Modeif you or someone elsesteals one of their eggs, but unlike if it’s triggered by proximity, they willnot become passive until you drop the egg, ordrop the Baby Sapsuckerthat theeggs can hatch intoif held long enough.
If theGiant Sapsucker is enraged because you stole an egg, it will rip open the doors to the ship to get in and attack you, so hiding in your ship won’t work;only dropping the egg, killing it, or going into a facility will save you.
They will alsolock onto the person who has stolen the egg specifically, instead of whoever is closest, and not only will ithunt them down, but it is alsocapable of remembering who stole the eggand willattack them on sightif they’re spotted again, such as if they enter and leave a facility.
How To Kill The Giant Sapsucker
The Giant Sapsucker has28 Health, and while it ispossible to kill it with just a Shovel, it isalmost impossiblefor a solo or even grouped playerto kill one due to itsimmense health, attack, and movement speed.
Thebest method to killone is toutilize Stormy weather, as a Giant Sapsucker will bekilled in three lightning strikes, and it’s incredibly easy to lure one to a metallic object, such as a shovel.
Lightning strikes will make the Giant Sapsucker enter Enraged Mode, but if the lightning has been attracted by a metallic object, the entity will focus on that object. If it was a random strike, it will randomly attack anything nearby.
Locate the Giant Sapsucker’s nestfirst, then either go inside the facility andgather metallic scrap, or get othermetallic items such as a shovelfrom your ship, andplace them in a safe areawhere they can’t be struck from while youget enough objects for a kill.
Then, pick it up anduse the method of dropping and picking it back uptoget it close to the nest, sit it down near theedge of the Giant Sapsucker’s detection range, then use its following behavior tolure it onto the item.
Other Methods Of Killing The Giant Sapsucker
Besides lightning, there areseveral other methods you can useto try and kill the Giant Sapsucker, but they willusually require more progressfirst andwon’t be as safe:
How To Safely Steal Giant Sapsucker Eggs
Because of the Giant Sapsucker’sspeed and ability to open the ship’s doors, the besttime to steal eggsfrom it isright before you leave the moon, either at night or whatever time is best, but it’snot recommended doing this solo.
Like if you’re going to kill it,one personshould bedesignated as the egg-holderand draw the Giant Sapsucker’s aggro, while theother peoplein the groupgrab as many eggs as they can.
If you’re theegg-holder, you’ll want to have low or zero weight for better stamina and higher speed, and carrying a TZP-Inhalant can help you make it backto the ship in time.
While the entity is distracted, everyone but the first egg-holdershould go a different path andrun back to the ship, then immediatelystart the shipbefore finding somewhere tostore the eggs so they don’t hatch.
Theegg-holdercan then eithersacrifice themselveswith the egg ortry to run back to the ship, jump onto the railing, andshut the doorin time before the Giant Sapsucker reaches them andavoid them as the ship leaves the moon.
If you’vepurchased a Teleporter, those back on the ship canteleport the egg-holderback while the ship is leaving, saving them and the egg.
Whether alone or in a group, it’s alsopossible touse a Jetpackor aflock of Tulip Lizardsto fly away from the Giant Sapsucker, but this is a lot riskier, as they can easily catch up to you still, and if you’re holding an egg, they’ll just wait where you land.
When attempting this solo, you’llonly be able to carry one egg, making it alot less worth itunless youneed the extra scrap to make quota.
If you want to do it solo, you’ll need tohave a TZP-Inhalant, the Giant Sapsucker to havespawned in a favorable location, preferably not far from the ship, and you’ll need towait until it’s sleeping.
Locate the Giant Sapsucker and the nest, thencompletely inhale the TZP-Inhalantwhile at theedge of the minimum safe distance, then crouch andwait for the entity to go to sleep.
Ensure you hear it snoring, thenapproach the nest while crouching, only standing up once you reach it, thengrab an egg and run for the ship, pull the handle tostart the ship, then quicklyshut the door while it’s approachingand the ship is leaving.
If you’vetimed things correctly, you’ll have a few moments ofextra time when the Giant Sapsucker is just waking upto successfully reach the ship andleave before it can rip open the doorsand get you.
