As soon as you enter the world ofScum, you’ll instantly realize just how big and detailed this game is since it’ll already take you over ten minutes to get the basic gear required for survival. If you want to progress in this harsh world when the odds are stacked against you, there will be quite a few mechanics for you to learn.
Lockpicking is one of these mechanics, and it’s arguably the hardest thing to learn in the game. Not only do you have to find some specific items to open locked doors/boxes, but also learn exactly how you can minimize your losses while taking part in this gameplay.
How Lockpicking Works
Since Scum doesn’t have a direct progression system, you can find locked doors and boxes as soon as you spawn into the world. These are morecommon in high-level areas, but also have a possibility of spawning in low-level ones. If you find a locked door this early, you won’t be able to interact with them.
This is mainly because youneed a lockpick and a screwdriver before you can start opening these locks. Once you have these items, you can enter a minigame screen by interacting with a lock, which will first show you the controls. Essentially, you can move your lockpick with your mouse while pushing in the screwdriver with the F key at the right time.
Youshouldn’t spam these buttons while trying to lockpicksince the item will break apart if used constantly.
While in the lockpick screen, you’llalso see the numbers for three items in this order: lockpick, screwdriver, and fame points. Each attempt of lockpicking used will consume one number from all these items, which means that you’ll also need a decent amount of fame before you start lockpicking.
The gameplay itself revolves around you finding a sweet spot with your lockpick before pressing the screwdriver in. Once you find this spot, the lock will turn 90 degrees to the right and the lockpicking will be successful. However, the spot you need is very precise and gets even harder with higher-level locks.
The difficulty of locks is in this order: Rusty, Silver, and Gold. Each difficulty hasa more precise requirement for the sweet spot.
Furthermore, the type of lockpick you use increases thenumber of times you can push the screwdriver inbefore the lockpick breaks.
While there’s always a lot of luck involved with lockpicking, you’re able to massively increase your chance of success with constant practice. You canalso upgrade the Thievery stat to the maximum while creating your charactersince it’s quite rough to level this stat up in the game. Unfortunately, you can’t put points in this stat once you’ve started your run.
Feathering is also an important mechanic if you want to become a lockpicking professional. This refers to gently touching the F key andunderstanding the movement of the lock to figure out the sweet spot. When the lock moves even a bit more than normal, you can release the F key, move the screwdriver slightly, and try to push it again.
Where To Find Lockpicks And Screwdrivers
The main reason why lockpicking is highly difficult to achieve in Scumis because of the rarity of the items you need for it. There are three types of lockpicks: Lockpicks, Improvised Lockpicks, and Advanced Lockpicks. You can craft the first one using Bobby Pins or Safety Pins, which you can randomly find while exploring.
On the other hand, Improvised and Advanced Lockpicks can only be found while looting, but they give you four and six attempts respectively before breaking. On the other hand, there are also two types of screwdrivers, but the only difference between them is the number of charges you can use before they break.
Theyellow screwdriver has a massive 40 chargeswhile the normal screwdriver’s charges are very low.
If you have a base with locks and want to prevent other players from entering, you can do so by crafting different types of lockpick securities. When a player fails a lockpick on your door with these securities, they get hit with an electric shock. The lethality of the shock depends on the item you make. Furthermore, the player can avoid this shock by wearing certain gloves.
