The first free update ofFrostpunk 2completely revamped how heating works when building your cities. No longer will you need to build your housing districts in pretzel shapes just to get the right heating bonuses. However, heat has become far more complicated and requires a different sort of thinking to get exactly right for your citizens' survival and comfort.
Thankfully, the Heat Management map will help you greatly in overseeing all the complexities and nuances of making a thriving and (most importantly) warm metropolis. Once you master this menu and learn the few tricks and tips we’ve laid out here for you, your city will be sure to survive the rolling tides of winter.
Heat Management: How Do I Manage Heat In My City?
Heat is a crucial elementto your city’s survival, being a direct influence to:
To see how heat is distributed in your city, you canopen the Heat Management tab by pressing on the temperature displayon your UI above.
Your heat map will show which districts are cold and which are radiating warmth.
Radiating Warmth is a condition that happens when a district is very warm.Any districts touching a zone that has Radiating Warmth will have their own temperature increasedby a quarter of a point per neighboring tile.
Radiating Warmth is difficult to see without zooming in. It is indicated by thin bands of red lines encircling the district, moving away from it in waves.
However, beware thatany district with a fire icondisplayed on itwill indicate Wasted Heat. In these areas, you shouldlower the temperatureto conserve resources.
You can easily lower the temperature of an individual district from the Heat Management tab bypressing the - iconor bysliding the heat bar downin the district’s individual menu.
If all districts in your city are too cold and you need to raise the general heat of all districts, you can increase the output of heat from your generator directly.
How To Increase Heat In Your Districts
Heating from districts is nowdependent on four things:
For every node of a district beside the generator (or a heat source), your district willincrease its heating bonus by one quarterof a point.
Within each heating district, you’llsee a sliding bar on the leftthat indicates the amount of heat your generator outputs to it.
Raising this bar increases a district’s heatbut also increases the amount of resources your generator consumes.
To further increase the warmth of your districts, there aretwo immediate and easy methods:
Heating Hubs will be the only option availableto you in the early game and can be crucial to building your city.
Much like the old Steam Hubs of the first game,Heating Hubs will distribute heat(and increase heating levels) to surrounding areas by two nodes in all directions.
To insulate your housing districts, you will have toresearch Housing Insulationinside your Research Hub. Your options are:
After finishing your research, you caninstall that insulation in districtsinside a district’s independent menu.
It will bedisplayed in the bottom-centreof the pop-up menu.
Insulation does not work in any districts except housing.
Inside your laws and proposals at City Council, you canfind the law ‘Heat Pipe Watch’ inside your Community Service options.
This willraise all Housing District heat levels by +1, a huge early-game bonus that should not be overlooked and costs nothing in resources to implement.
As a bonus for keeping all your districts warm, you’ll get additional Heat Stamp revenue from the Heat Auctions law. This is very strong in the early-game, allowing you to get two Community Service boons simultaneously.
