While the Dál Riata tribes inTainted Grail: The Fall Of Avalonhave mostly kept to themselves in recent years, avoiding the common issues of the Avalonians, they still face issues in the icy tundra of the Forlorn Swords. Part is due to themselves, and part is them becoming another victim of King Arthur’s actions.

One man, Gerf’hanr, wishes to unite the Dál Riata and march on Kamelot – or at the very least, unite them for everyone’s sake – but this won’t be done with problems left unsolved. It’s up to you to reach out to the Volker Tribe and help restore both the pride and cultural figure they’ve lost.

How To Find The Matron’s Insignia

Speak to Brideiinside for information, then go into your inventory andsmoke the Etherbloom Pipethat he gives you so you may see trails hidden in the Wyrd.

If you’reusing a Mage Build, Bridei sells several upgraded spells, such as Hailstorm, Stormpiercer, and Caustic Wrath, that are worth purchasing.

Leave the Máthair Temple, take the path heading souththat you might’ve used to reach the village, and follow itacross the ice bridgeto the southeastern edge of the region.

Once it’s dead, you’ll findFrig’s corpse against the tallest totemin the room, and you’ll have toloot her to get the Matron’s Insignia. This willcomplete Follow Her Stepsand immediatelystart the next quest, The Forked Path.

Who Should You Show The Matron Insignia To First?

Crawl through thesmall tunnel across from Frig’s corpsefor a shortcut back to the entrance, thenreturn to the Volker Tribe Village. From here, you’llhave a decisionabout whether to show theMatron’s Insignia to Angsvar first, orshow it to Bridei firstinstead.

While you can speak with Elspet before the Volker quests for context, theredoesn’t seem to be a way to prevent her death, even if you visit their house before starting any of the Volker’s quests.

Showing it to Angsvar is requiredas part of The Forked Path, but youdon’t have to show it to Bridei, though doing sounlocks a second side quest, Thing On The Doorstep, a special recipe, and analternate resolution to the quest.

Bringing The Insignia To Angsvar

If youbring the Matron’s Insignia to Angsvarfirst, you’ll unlock athird objective in The Forked Pathand will need toinvestigate the cause of Elspet’s death.

Go toNessa and Ingve’s housein thesoutheastern cornerof the village, next to Stigr’s House, and speak toNeasa at the tableto receive a keyitem for the quest, Elspet’s Letter.

From here, you can either go ahead andshow the letter to Angsvar, or you can alsoshow the Matron Insignia to Brideifor his questbefore you’re locked out of it.

Bringing The Insignia To Bridei

If you bring the Matron’s Insignia to Bridei atany time before you give Elspet’s letter to Angsvar, you’ll unlock asecond side quest, Thing On The Doorstep, and can enter thetrue Máthair Temple via the doorwayin the wall.

Inside, you’llfight a Fore-Dweller Knightafterdrinking from the basin, and it’s essentially aweaker version of the Wyrdstalkerthat begins stalking you in Cuanacht. After it’s dead, take some of the potionfrom the basin, and you’llreturn to the mortal realm.

Speak with Brideiagain to learn some key information, and he’llgive you three Máthairs' Battlerage Potionsto give to Angsvar, as well as therecipe for itfor yourself. This will alsocomplete Thing On The Doorstep, which rewards you witharound 4,500 EXP.

How To Complete The Forked Path

Goback to Angsvar, speak with him, andshow him Elspet’s letterto reveal the truth of her death to him. During the conversation, you’ll haveone final decisionthat affects the Volker Tribe, but they willagree to join the Moot regardlessof the decision involving their tribe’s future.

WhileHelmi is also part of the side quest, When Gods Speak, you don’t have to complete this quest to be able to suggest heras the next Matron.

Showing Angsvar The Insignia With Bridei’s Quest

If youdidn’t complete Thing On The Doorstepwith Bridei, your only successful option with Angsvar will be tosuggest Helmi as the next Matron. Angsvar will then agree to join the Moot.

If you go to Bridei first andcomplete Thing On The Doorstep beforeshowing Angsvar the Matron Insignia, you’ll be able tosuccessfully suggest they don’t appoint any more Matrons, and can give him the potion Bridei made. Angsvar will also agree to join the Moot.

After your decision and the conversation, The Forked Path will be finished, rewarding you with around 5,000 EXP, and you can eitherreport the decision to Gerf’hanrand getKing Arthur’s Greaves as a rewardfor it, orcontinue helping the other tribesif you haven’t already.
