If you want to get items that are always the best inThe Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredwithout worrying about leveling, then Daedric artifacts are the way to go. Not only do you get some powerful gear early in the game, but some of these quests are also the most entertaining or challenging.
One of the Daedric artifacts you may get is the Masque of Clavicus Vile, which you can get in a quest from the Daedric prince of trickery and bargains. All you need to do is complete his quest and kill a target, which sounds simple until you find out who that target is.
How To Start The Clavicus Vile Quest
To start the Clavicus Vile Quest, you’ll need all the prerequisites first. you may only start this quest once your character islevel 20 or higher. The shrine also needs anoffering of 500 gold, which shouldn’t be a problem at that level because of the level of gear enemies get that you can sell.
Where To Find Clavicus Vile’s Shrine
The Shrine of Clavicus Vile can be found to thesouthwest of the Imperial City. If you go to where the two roads meet, heading to Skingrad and go south, you’ll come across the shrine. The area can spawn leveled enemies and bandits, so keep that in mind when you’re going there.
How To Complete The Clavicus Vile Quest
When you interact with the shrine, Clavicus Vile will give you the task offinding a sword called theUmbra Sword, a recurring legendary weapon in The Elder Scrolls games. They’ll tell you to head over to thenearby village of Pell’s Gateto find out where you can find Umbra, and the person it’s taking over.
Once you’re done talking to the Daedric prince,you’ll notice that the dog disappears from the shrine. When you move away from the area, the dog will talk to you sincehe’ll be in your inventory.Don’t worry, the dog statue doesn’t weigh anything. The dog’s name is Barbas and he’ll join you.
Barbas will ask you not to get Umbrafor Clavicus Vile, since it’ll ruin the Daedric Prince. You can make that choice later. First, you’ll need to go to Pell’s Gate, which iseast-southeast of the shrine. From there, you’ll need totalk to Irroke the Wide, ask him about Umbra, and he’ll tell you their location.
How To Defeat Umbra
Irroke the Wide will tell you that Umbra can be found in theAyleid ruin of Vindasel, northwest of Pell’s Gate. If you took the road from the shrine to the village, there’s a high chance that you’ve discovered it already.
The dungeon is a simple and short one with three rooms. The first one has afloor spike trap, while the second one has agas trap in the middle. When you arrive in the last room, you’ll find your target.
You will need to defeat Umbra, but it’s easier said than done. Even level 25 characters can have a hard time fighting her, so be prepared; she hasa lot of health and deals a lot of damage. She is also fairly fast, and her armor is a full set of Ebony armor with a shield, making her tanky.
If you don’t want to fight fairly, you can lead her to the first room andrun around the spike floor trapuntil she dies from it.
you’re able to alsorun back to the Imperial City, where the guards will fight her for you.
Once you’ve defeated her, take the sword Umbra and go back to the Shrine.
How To Keep The Umbra Sword
The Umbra Sword is one of the best one-handed swords in the game, and the soul-trap enchantment can be great for filling up soulgems to power other enchanted items. You can listen to Barbas andkeep the sword for yourself. You can do this by just going back to the shrine.
Once you’re back at the shrine, interact with it, and you will get an option togive the sword or not. If youchoose the latter, then you’ll keep the sword. The downside is thatyou won’t get the Daedric Artifact, which can be a problem if you’re doing this for theBlood of the Daedraquest.
How To Get The Masque of Clavicus Vile
If you don’t want to keep Umbra, you can go back to the shrine of Clavicus Vile and interact with it. Pick the choice togive the sword to the Daedric prince, and the quest will be complete. You will also berewarded with theMasque of Clavicus Vile.
The Masque of Clavicus Vile is an enchantedheavy armor headgearwith an enchantment thatincreases your Personality attribute by 20 points. The Personality attribute affects disposition as well as prices when you’re buying or selling from vendors.
