Xur received a major rework inDestiny 2’sFinal Shape expansion. He is now a vendor who always visits the Tower during the weekend, giving players a wide range of Exotic goods to purchase. These goods are now valued in Strange Coins in place of Legendary Shards, a now deprecated currency type.
Strange Coins have been overhauled to serve as Xur’s main currency type. Awarded from ritual content, you’ll need to farm for dozens of these coins to get your hands on any of the Nine’s mysterious wares. But if you’re looking to get your hands on the Xurfboard or a good Exotic roll, look no further. We’ll be going over how Strange Coins work in Destiny 2 and the best farming strategies for them.
What Are Strange Coins?
Strange Coins are acurrency type awarded from ritual content—Vanguard Ops, Onslaught, Crucible, and Gambit matches. You can use these tokens at Xur during his weekend Tower visit to purchase goods from his inventory. Xur sells a little bit of everything: Exotic weapons, catalysts, older seasonal gear, and even upgraded materials. Purchasing anything from Xur will cost a small sum of Strange Coins.
Currently, the only way to spend Strange Coins is at Xur’s shop. Their original drop source fromDares of Eternityhas been deprecated.
Where Is Xur?
Xur is always located in the Tower Bazaar from Friday until Tuesday. As of The Final Shape expansion, he no longer moves between destinations. If you see Xur on the Tower map, he’s open for business. Speak with him to peruse his shop and spend your Strange Coins on whatever draws your eye.
How To Get Strange Coins
Strange Coins drop from all ritual activities. This includes Vanguard Ops and Nightfall permutations, Onslaught, Crucible, and Gambit. All limited-time variants of Crucible, such asTrials of Osirisand Iron Banner, may also drop Strange Coins at the end of each game. Exact coin payouts are listed below.
You may hold up to 199 Strange Coins at a time.

Season Pass
Additionally, you can also get Strange Coins through the season pass reward track. Players who don’t own the current season can earn up to104 Strange Coins through the season pass. If you own the pass, that number increases to 208.
Favor Of The Nine
While not a direct source of Strange Coins, Xur has a buff calledFavor of the Ninethat increases the number of Strange Coins you receive from all sources by one. For example, if you complete a Vanguard Op, you would receive five Strange Coins instead of four.
You maypurchase this buff from Xur whenever his shop is active.Enter the “More Strange Offers” tab of his inventory and select the “Favor of the Nine” item; purchasing it is free. Once obtained, you must spend at least 46 Strange Coins before acquiring this buff again.
There are two Strange Coin farms we recommend:
Grandmaster Nightfalls
If you have a fireteam to farm with, it’s tough to top Grandmaster Nightfalls. With a good squad and some strong builds, you can clear most GMs in roughly 15 minutes, awarding nine coins on completion. If you can speed up the farm slightly and have fast load times, you can earn up to 36 coins an hourjust by farming GMs, potentially more if a double loot event is active.
The Devils' Lair
Solo players and those who dislike PvP can farmThe Devils' Lair strike in the Cosmodrome instead. This strike is fairly short and always awards four coins on completion. A single clear takes about seven minutes at an average pace. If you attempt to speedrun the mission, you can get this down to six minutes or less. It’s the best option if you want to farm Strange Coins at your own pace and dislike endgame content.
PvP Events
While not the most efficient Strange Coin farm, playing PvP events like Iron Banner and Trials of Osiris allows you todip into multiple reward sources simultaneously. Completing a single game will award Crucible rewards, that PvP’s specific reward pool, Strange Coins, and potentially other seasonal rewards through Revenant’s Tonics or Heresy’s Tome of Want. You won’t be getting Strange Coins quickly, but you’ll be swimming in other drops that might prove useful.
