InPalia’s Elderwood expansion, the forest has been invaded by a negative substance called Echo. It’s also referred to in the game as Infected Essence, which has permeated much of the flora and fauna around Elderwood.
Although infected essence has a negative effect on the world, it can still be useful in certain recipes and to get some new Elderwood decor for your plot. Let’s discuss how you’re able to get infected essence and how you can use it to bring a little bit of Elderwood home.
How to Get Infected Essence
The main way to obtain infected essence is bypicking up the glowing, blue and purple orbsyou’ll find around Elderwood. You won’t be able to pick it up until Tamala gives you the glovesduring the main questline The Nature of Shadows.
Each orb you pick up will give you between one and three infected essence. You can also get the essence bycollecting affected animals, bugs, fish, and flowers that have been affected. You’ll obtain the means of which to do so through thefollowing Elderwood quests:
How to Use Infected Essence
There are quite a few uses for infected essence in Palia. After you complete the quest The Nature of Shadows, Tamala will tell you tocome to her shop anytime to trade infected essencefor more of the Elderwood Potions. But there are many more things you can purchase from her shop using infected essence.

Throughout your adventures in Elderwood, you’ll seevarious pieces of furniture that you can interact with. The first time you interact with one, you’ll meet a piksii, a type of insect in Elderwood.
This particular piksii would like totrade Elderwood furniture with you for trash, but by trash this creature meansinfected essence. Many of these pieces will require a lot of essence, so don’t worry about collecting too much. Just like many of the resources in this game,the more you can gather, the better.
You’ll also need infected essence tocraft more of the arrows, smoke bombs, and luresthat you need to use on infected creatures, bugs, and fish in Elderwood.
When you’ve completed the associated quests, you’llreceive the crafting recipesfor each type of ammo.
