Since you’ve made it this far inOblivion Remastered’sDark Brotherhood questline, you’re already in the midst of a nearly impossible situation, as you and Lucien Lachance scramble to discover the true traitor’s identity. Yourjourney up the ranks in the Dark Brotherhoodwas fairly straightforward, but now the situation requires careful planning.
Instead of slashing your way through your problems, Lucien asks you to discover the identity of the traitor by lying in wait at the dead drop location. While it’s a fairly simple idea for a trap, nothing is ever quite so easy when it comes to the Dark Brotherhood questline.
How To Start Following A Lead
Immediately after you kill Ungolim andcomplete A Kiss Before Dying,Lucien Lachance will appear and reprimand you,beginning the next quest, Following a Lead.
After learning that all of your killings have been the work ofa traitorous trickster who switched your dead drop contracts,you’re tasked with heading to your next drop tocatch the traitorwhile they’re leaving your next set of orders.
Where To Find The Dark Brotherhood’s Traitor
Following the instructions of the previous contract,go to Anvil and crouch down behind a barrelnear the pond until you catch someone namedEnilrothdropping dead drop orders off at the pickup location.
Confront Enilroth, but you’ll learn that he was just acting on orders from the true traitor – a robed man who was hiding at the lighthouse nearby.
Before you go, steal your 500 gold reward from Enilroth or take it after dispatching him. That is the only gold you’ll get for this section.
First,fast travel to the Anvil Lighthouseand speak to thelighthouse keeper, Ulfgar Fog-Eye, and convince him to give you the key to the cellar so that you’re able to catch the traitor.
Ulfgarshould be at the top of the lighthouse andwill hand over the keyregardless of what threat you make.
Searching The Lighthouse Cellar
Once you have the key, make your way down into the cellar and look around the terrifying scene laid out before you.
Unlock the average wooden doorand proceed into an even scarier room with a Crazed Dog pacing around.
Ignore the gruesome decapitated head on the table andread the traitor’s journal on the adjacent bench.The journal contains more about the traitor’s motivations against the Dark Brotherhood, and reveals that their mother was killed by Lucien Lachance.
Return to Applewatch to report to Lucien Lachance, only to find that theBlack Hand got to him first and killed Lucien,mistakenly believing him to be the traitor.
You’re approached by Arquen, who promotes you to Speakerand gives you your own Black Hand Robes with a matching hood.
This gear was available to loot from previously killed Black Hand members, and was one of the few clues to the reality behind your actions.
Once the conversation ends, Arquen explains thatyou must accompany the Black Hand members to the Night Mother’s Sanctuaryto stabilize the Dark Brotherhood.
There are four Black Hand members in the room, and given that the dead drop orders said to kill Arquen, the traitor must be one of the other three.
What Rewards Do You Get From Following A Lead?
While you will not receive any gold reward for your efforts, save for the bit you pocketed from Enilroth,you will be promoted to Speakerof the Dark Brotherhood by completing this quest.
Speak to Arquen between midnight and 3:00 am when you are ready to travel to the sanctuary.
Selecting the ‘Night Mother’ topic and agreeing to go to the Night Mother will teleport you and begin the next quest, Honor Thy Mother.
