As part of your introductory journey through Arrakis inDune: Awakening, you’ll be tasked with constructing a Sub-Fief and claiming part of the planet’s surface for your very own. Sub-Fiefs function like shelters that can protect you from oncoming storms, and also give you access to various technologies that can help improve your journey across the planet.
Beyond the basic tutorial given for constructing Sub-Fiefs, there are a lot of different elements worth considering to make the best sub-fief possible. Mastering this skill is essential for progression, so here’s what you need to know to build a Sub-Fief in Dune: Awakening.
How To Unlock Sub-Fiefs
Soon after you land on Arrakis,you’ll be assigned various quests.
One of these quests is called ‘Shelter and Shields,‘and gets assigned to you right after you take out your first Scavenger Camp.
Simply toggle the quest to ‘Track’so that your HUD will display the steps necessary to complete the quest.
From there,you’ll be tasked with the following:
You’ll be guided through these steps of construction, after which, you canplace a Sub-Fief Console, around which you will then construct your Sub-Fief.
Don’t place your Sub-Fief Console out on open sands, as this will leave your domicile threatened by Sandworms.
The best places to plant Sub-Fief Consoles arenear trade outposts.
How To Construct A Sub-Fief
Once you have placed your Sub-Fief, you will havea predetermined area of landclaim assigned to you.
This areadictates where you can place construction materialsfor your Sub-Fief.
Remember,every element of your Sub-Fief requires specific materials, listed in the description of the construction element. Make sure you have what you need.
From there, you’re allowed to construct however you want, butyour Sub-Fief needs the following things:
Constructing these elements is essential to your survival on Arrakisand ensures that you have access to storage facilities, have power, and that your shelter will be insulated from sandstorms. You’ll be guided through these construction processes as well.
By using your Sub-Fief console,you canmanage power, storage, and the permissionsfor other players to enter your Sub-Fief.
Once you’ve done the above and have powered up your facilities,you’ll now have free rein to do with your Sub-Fief as you like.
As you place walls, items, and more, remember,placing the highlighted version doesn’t actually construct the item.
You’ll need toreselect the item and hold down the corresponding construction buttonto actually fabricate the item into reality.
Sub-Fief Construction Categories
Now that you have control of your Sub-Fief,there are several categories of constructionavailable for you to use:
Details
Placeables
This category includes items likeconsoles, refineries, fabricators, and other highly essential items for your Sub-Fief.
Furniture
This category includes items likechairs, lamps, and decor, which allow you to customize your Sub-Fief, though most don’t offer utility.
Choam Shelter
This category includes items likewalls, floors, stairs, and other basic elements of construction that allow you to customize the shape of your Sub-Fief.
Within each construction category,there are sub-categories. These are relatively self-explanatory.
For example, in ‘Furniture,’ there aresub-categories like ‘Inclines’ for stairs.
While all three construction categories have their various uses,the most important construction category to focus on is Placeables.
When in the construction menu, you’re able to toggle through each sub-category, or you canselect ‘Change Set’to move between broader construction categories.

Fabricators
Fabricators allow you to craft more expansive and powerful items like armor, vehicles, and more.

Refineries allow you to gain specific resources and water from blood, raw ore, and more.
These items help expand your storage capabilities within your Sub-Fief.
Storage Containers
When it comes to building up your Sub-Fief, you’ll want toprioritize constructing these items first.Some main missions will lead you to build these as well, but regardless, make sure you do these straight away;don’t ignore these quests.
Remember,you need to have your construction tool equippedin order to make changes to your Sub-Fief.
Sub-Fief Maintenance
Now that your Sub-Fief is complete, there are a few things you need to keep in mind tomaintain your Sub-Fief.
First, you’ll want tomake sure you’re constantly harvesting fuel cells, as you’ll need these to power your facility and shields, thus keeping sandstorms at bay.
When you die,your Sub-Fief is an automatic respawn pointthat you can always return to, even if you don’t have a Respawn Beacon up.
Second,make sure you return oftento refine materials, store items to avoid encumbrance, and refuel your generators.
Don’t get too attached to your first Sub-Fief, as you’ll eventually be tasked with abandoning it as part of the main quest line.
Third and finally,you’ll eventually be tasked with copying your Sub-Fiefby researching the Advanced Construction Kit.
When you do this,you can subsequently replace your Sub-Fief.
From there,you’ll be able to relocate your Sub-Fief whenever you like, adding onto it as you see fit and relocating to various locations on Arrakis.
