Amy Rose is one of the six legendary creatures released as part ofMagic: The Gathering’scrossover with the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise through its Secret Lair product line. The drop features six new-to-Magic cards, with Amy Rose being the one that is primarily Equipment-focused.
There are plenty of ways to build an Amy Rose deck, but she is one of the best commanders for what is called a Sunforger deck. These decks are built around the namesake Equipment and let you cast various spells from your library for free by unequipping it. This decklist will be utilizing Amy Rose as a Sunforger commander.
Sword of the Animist
x10 Mountain
x7 Plains
The Mysosynth Gardens
War Room
This decklistcontains 19 creatures, seven sorceries, 21 instants, 17 artifacts, two enchantments,and34 lands (one being the backside of an instant). Since Sunforger can cast instant spells directly from your library, there are a large number of them that either draw or pump stats (in some cases, both).
Key Cards
Amy Rose
Amy Rose is what makes the deck well-rounded. By attacking, you can cheat around any equip costs since Amy attaches Equipment with its effect. In the case with Sunforger, you want to constantly unattach it. So,Amy helps to re-equip Sunforger after you unattach it.
While Amy’s primary use is using Sunforger, its effect to pump another creature is also very relevant. There are many pump spells in the deck, which should be used on Amyso that the power is even greater than another attacking creature.
Amy’s effects will resolve all at once, so if you have pump spells in hand, make sure to use them before Amy equips to get the highest stat boost possible.
Sunforger
The namesake of the Sunforger archetype, Sunforgergives a big power boost and can cast any red or white instant from the library for free. Sunforger’s effect can be activated at any time, soit can get removal, a pump spell, or protection, whatever you might need given the current game state.
Generally, youwant to equip Sunforger with Amy’s effect, get the stat boosts, then unequip itto get a pump spellto deal even more damage. Normally, aSunforger deck can be costlywhen it comes to equipping it back onto a creature, butAmy Rose equips it for free, and that’s why it’s one of, if notthe best Sunforger commander.
Leyline Of Resonance
Many of the spells in the deck directly target a creature, making Leyline of Resonance one of the best permanents in the deck. Itcreates a free copy of any instant or sorcery spell, with the potential to be played for free if you’re lucky enough to have it in your opening hand.
If a spell is copied that draws a card, you’ll draw a card for each copy. This makes it much easier to draw through your deck so you can get to your best cards quicker.
The strength of Leyline of Resonance comes from being able tostack stat-boosts and spread powerful abilities to your primary attackersby giving them both effects like trample or double strike. Thecopies will also trigger magecraft abilities, making your turns even more explosive.
Feather, The Redeemed
Themajority of your spells target a creature you control, which makes Feather, the Redeemed, the best creature outside your commander itself. It makes it soall instant and sorceries that target a creature get to return to the hand, making it so you essentially never lose these cards.
Even if Feather gets removed, so long as its effect is triggered, you’ll still get the cards back. Feather makes cards like Leyline of Resonance even stronger, as you’ll always have targeting spells to ensure it triggers. This is whyhaving no hand size limit is vitalto ensure you won’t have to discard cards out of your hand.
How To Play The Deck
General Game Plan
An Amy Rose Sunforger Commander deckwants to get Sunforger on the battlefield as quickly as possible to start utilizing its effect. Sculpting Steel and Mirage Mirror are both excellent ways to get multiple copies of Sunforger on the battlefield to use the effect multiple times a turn.
Sunforger’s +4/+0 stat boost is high, with Amy Rose able to give a big stat boost to another creature when equipped. If you have two copies of Sunforger, it may be better to keep one equipped on Amy and the other the one you unattach to get spells.
Sunforger decks are a mix of Equipmentand spellslinger strategies. As such, cards like Guttersnipe, Kessig Flamebreather, and Coruscation Mageall deal burn damage when you cast noncreature spells, helping you to bring life totals down lower faster.
There are a ton of pump spells in the deck, so cards such asZada, Hedron Grinder, and Leyline of Resonanceare all very useful for copying your pump spells and applying them to multiple creatures instead of just one.You want to use spells that draw cards on Zada, as it’ll copy it for all other creatures and draw you a ton of cards.
Win Conditions And Flaws
Theprimary win condition is winning through combat. With how easy it is to cast pump spells and combat tricks, you can have two massive attackers since Amy’s power can boost another creature.Amy is the prime target for pump spells, as there’s little reason to spread them out unless your opponent might have removal.
You canalso win the game through commander damage. If an opponent takes 21 or more combat damage from a commander, they automatically lose the game. With how much stat-boosting goes on, it becomesvery easy for Amy to hit that threshold.
Thebiggest downside of the deck is its heavy reliance on Sunforger. Sunforger is a fantastic Equipment with a great effect, but if it ever gets removed, your deck becomes significantly weaker. You canmake copies of Sunforgeror get it back with a land like Buried Ruin, butif you don’t have these available, your deck slows down considerablyand becomes a weaker spellslinger deck instead of a full-power Sunforger one.
