As you’d expect from a Metroidvania,Shadow Labyrinthis divided into multiple different areas, and most of them take you through a bunch of puzzle rooms with a final boss fight at the end. These fights lead to you getting various new abilities, making your further fights a little easier.
Wilem Ong is one such final boss, but you won’t just be fighting the boss in this battle. It’s arguably one of the toughest battles in the game, and you have to employ some specific tactics to get past it.
Where To Find Wilem Ong
There are three types of boss zones in Shadow Labyrinth:main bosses, mini bosses, and hoards of enemies inside a blocked room. Wilem Ong belongs to the first category, and when you defeat a main boss in this game, you also unlock a new ability after a small animation of Puck devouring them whole.
However, to do that, you’ll first have to cross the entire Torn Lands area. You get here after crossing the Sky-High Tree, and spawn on its top right side. You have to make your way to the bottom rightanddefeat Duke Sirius on your wayto reach Wilem Ong.
How To Defeat Wilem Ong
Wilem Ong is quite an easy boss by himself sincehe has three major attacks: parry, sword slash, and projectiles. In the parry attack, he enters a stance with his sword behind his back. If you attack him from the front during this, he’ll instantly parry your attacks and render you immobile. In this time, he’llattack you with his sword and this attack is not dodgeable.
To avoid getting hit by this, you may simply get close to the boss and then dash past his body. Once behind him,you can freely attack him without triggering the parry. However, as you get deeper into the battle, the boss will simply start using his sword slashes instead of the parry when he gets close enough.
When the boss has little HP remaining, these sword slashes willalso create a shockwave that moves horizontallyacross the field.
After reaching past the halfway point in the battle, the boss will start summoning projectiles thatland at your current position at the time of the projectile’s release. However, the main difficulty with the Wilem Ong fight is thesmaller enemies he constantly summons. He summons them in the following order:
1
2
Tribal Assassin and Tribal Lancer
3
Tribal Scourge and Tribal Axman
4
Tribal Assassin and Tribal Lancer twice in quick succession
5
Six Tribal Chargers followed by anotherTribal Charger, Scourge, and Archer each.
By the fifth summon, youshould be able to stun Wilem Ongand prevent any more summons in the fight.
The main idea for this fight is to use your Gaia mode at the right time. If you’ve been defeated, you’ll spawn with half of your Gaia energy filled. Every time you defeat a summoned enemy in this fight, you have to devour them with Gaia. This way, you’ll have the mode ready by the time he summons the fifth wave.
You can then trigger the Gaia mode andhack away at the boss while also defeating all the side mobs easily. Once you get to the fifth wave with the mode ready, you can easily finish the rest of the fight.
Wilem Ong Fight Rewards
As mentioned above, every time you defeat a main boss in Shadow Labyrinth, you’ll get a special ability for your character. While you might be expecting a parry or a double jump, this boss fight gives you the ability to parry, which is one of the most common attacks from the boss.
When you see an enemy trigger an attack with a red shine, you can time your parry and stop these attacks, making it quite useful in subsequent boss fights. With certain perks, you can also deflect projectiles back at them with the timed parry.
