Quick Links
There are many parts toDeath Stranding 2: On The Beach. Most of those parts involve a lot of walking and trying your absolute best not to fall. And often times failing. However, more than just walking and delivering cargo, Sam will sometimes come up against a threat he can’t just avoid. And sometimes, it’s a good old-fashioned boss fight.
Death Stranding 2’s very first boss is the Giant BT, which is really more of a giant head and spinal cord. If you’ve played the original Death Stranding, then you won’t be absurdly unusual to you, but it can still be challenging if you’ve mostly been avoiding any combat or use of firearms up to this point. So here are some helpful tips on how to beat it.
When Do You Encounter The Giant BT Boss Fight?
Being the very first boss fight in the game, the Giant BT will be encountered very early on. In fact, they are one of the final things you will do in Mexico at all before moving onwards. After you make your way to the Western Observatory, you will have a brief cutscene with Deadman, where he tells you that he will pick up the chat later.
Right after this, you will be informed of a massive BT that is nearby. This is classed as Main Order No. 6 in-game, so bear that in mind so you can be prepared. The boss battle will begin as soon as you walk towards the crest of the hill outside of the observatory, so verify you save the game and have all your gear prepped before you fully exit the building.
Recommended Gear To Bring
Seeing as this is a boss fight, there’s no easy way out, no tactical victory you can achieve. Just a one-on-one encounter with a BT much larger than any you’ll have seen in the game thus far. Being that it is a BT too, normal weapons won’t have much effect here, so plan accordingly.
With how movement works in Death Stranding 2, it will be hard to avoid getting hit entirely, though you can definitely minimise the damage you take. For one, pack lightly. The lighter Sam is, the easier he can be moved, letting him move faster and dodge attacks more effectively. Only take what you need.
In terms of what you actually should bring,Blood Grenades are a given, and will deal the highest amount of damage possible to the boss. After completing the prior Main Order, you also should have unlocked the ability to fabricate anMP Assault Rifle. While it won’t deal quite as much damage as Blood Grenades, it will provide more consistent damage, so make sure to bring along one of two.
Next up would be Blood Bags. You will get hit, so having back-up health is essential. They weigh very little too and have a dedicated pouch, so bring along all that can fit for safety’s sake.
Beyond that, don’t bring anything else, especially anything you don’t want damaged. Any spare cargo, non-lethal weapons or other tools anditems can be kept in your private locker at the Western Observatoryfor their own protection. Once you have put away all your precious items and kitted yourself out with the appropriate weapons, you are free to enter the boss fight.
How To Defeat The Giant BT
The Giant BT isn’t too complex, though fighting BTs in general is quite different from human enemies. More than just needing unique weapons and tactics to take them down, they are able to drag you into unique arenas, giving them the home advantage. For the Giant BT,this is a massive tar pit with floating pieces of debris and submerged vehicles. It can also swim beneath the tar currents to reposition itself, so keeping your eyes on it at all times is essential.
On top of this, you are slower when moving through tar, so make every step worthwhile and avoid trying to take long journeys as the Giant BT will easily cut you off.
Moveset
In terms of its moveset, the Giant BT tends to try attack at a distance, though it does have one of two attacks for when you are too closer as well. Here’s a quick breakdown of all of them:
Most of these moves are fairly easy to avoid by keeping on the move along the pieces of debris where possible, though the Vacuum moves are the most dangerous. For Vacuum Suction, there are two ways to avoid it. Debris tends to get consumed more slowly, so standing on some will give you ample time to aim a Blood Grenade, which willinstantly end the attack if you hit the mouth.
You can dodge with your weapon out by holding L2 to aim, and then pressing Xwhile holding the left stick to dodge in the direction you are holding.
If you can’t quite get on any debris and are too close to begin aiming, justcenter your balance with L2 and R2 and walk away from the Giant BT, just like you’re wading through a river. Eventually, it will end the attack naturally. Just keep in mind that it may follow up with Vacuum Release at some point.
Strengths And Weaknesses
The Giant BT is sturdy, andthe massive health bar means it won’t be going down any time soon, especially with the gear you have access to at the moment. However, it is not so large as it seems, especially if you keep aiming at its weakpoints.
Being a BT, it is entirely impervious to live rounds and rubber bullets, withMP bullets being the only ones that can actually damage them. This makes Blood Grenades your best friend during this fight, easily able to interrupt its attacks and deal high damage.
Throughout the fight, pure white versions of Sam will emerge from the tar to give you extra weapons and ammo. Make sure to pick this up if you’re ever running low, and to offload empty weapons.
However, you will likely have to use MP Assault Rifles to deal consistent damage, so use them in tandem with Blood Grenades.Bullets shot through blood will deal increased damage to BTs, and this goes doubly so for MP bullets.
However, the Giant BT can also reposition quite easilyand shake or outright remove the debris you are standing on. Because of this, it’s best not to stay on any single piece of debris for too long, but to keep moving across multiple pieces. This will keep you from being slowed in the tar, but also fast enough to react to the Giant BT’s attacks.
The Giant BT takes the most damage in the open portion of its face.Try to aim your attacks here for the most part, though be aware that it moves quite a bit, making it hard to hit it precisely with Blood Grenades while at a distance.
