The ribbet is a highly unique ancestry you can play as inDaggerheart, the TTRPG from the creative minds at Critical Role. Characters from this ancestry resemble amphibious, frog-like creatures that are well-suited for aquatic adventures and can prove highly dexterous in combat.
Despite their cute and cuddly outward appearance, ribbets are well-suited for a life of high adventure and can occupy many different types of roles within your party. But if you’re not sure where to start when it comes to building one, you’ll want to check out this guide. Here’s everything you need to know about ribbets in Daggerheart.
Ribbet Ancestry Overview
Much like frogs in the real world, ribbets can take on many different colors, from cool or bright tones to more earthy or swamp-based colors.
Typically, ribbets are relatively short in stature, ranging from about three to four feet tall. However, all ribbets primarily move by hopping.
They also havetwo main features as part of their ancestry, detailed below.
Details
Amphibious
Like many types of frogs in the real world, ribbets can breathe and move naturally underwaterwithout any encumbrance or nerfs.
Long Tongue
All ribbets have an exceptionally long tongue, just like many real amphibians.
As a ribbet, you can use your tongue to grab onto things within a Close range. When you do so,mark a Stress to use your tongue as a Finesse Close weapon, which can deal 1d12 physical damage using your Proficiency.
Daggerheart has a variety of descriptive terms for range, including Close Range.
If something is Close, that means that it is typically about 10-30 feet awayfrom you, meaning you can use your Long Tongue feature on enemies up to 30 feet away.
What Classes Work Best For Ribbets?
While their amphibious nature and underwater breathing can prove useful, the ribbet’s Long Tongue feature is the best feature to inform your class selection.
This featurecan synergize with a handful of class features, as detailed below, which can help with your overall character build.
Troubadour Bard
The foundation feature of this subclass allows you an ability called Epic Song, which allows you tomake a target within Close range of you temporarily Vulnerable.
If an enemy is Vulnerable, that means you have advantage on rollsagainst said creature, which can synergize well with your Long Tongue attack.
Warden of the Elements Druid
The specialization feature for this subclass allows you topotentially affect enemies within Close range in several negative ways.
Weakening enemies within Close rangeand then following up with a Long Tongue attackcan prove great fun in combat.
Nightwalker Rogue
The specialization feature for this subclass allows you tomake a Spellcast Role (15) and subsequently obscure an area within Close range with a dark cloud.
This means you can potentiallytrap enemies within Close range of you, perfect for once again using your Long Tongue attack.
What Communities Work Best For Ribbets?
When it comes to communities for ribbets, most of the community features can work well with this ancestry. However, two communities make a lot of narrative sensefor ribbet characters, as detailed below.
Seaborne
Obviously, seaborne makes a lot of narrative senseas a community for ribbets, given their amphibious nature.
This community is all aboutliving near large bodies of water. Some even live on the open sea itself. Plus, this community’s feature allows you togain bonuses to rolls whenever you roll with Fear, which can prove highly powerful.
Wildborne
Wildborne community members areright at home in nature and are often naturally stealthy.
Because ribbets make for great druids and rogues, this community makes a lot of conceptual sense for ribbets, especially given the Lightfoot feature, which allows you to roll with advantage when trying not to be heard while moving.
