Doom: The Dark Agesis the latest bloodthirsty shooter fromidSoftware, and, in usual fashion, offers up a bombastic single-player campaign to blast your way through hordes of demons. It comes outfitted with 22 distinct chapters and a variety of new locations to discover and a comprehensive arsenal of weapons to experiment with.
But, unlike Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal before it, there are no multiplayer modes or other offerings to speak of, meaningyour main and only focus in Dark Ages is the campaign. Most levels are linear, arena-based offerings where you need to slaughter countless monsters and live to tell the tale, while others are more open and focused on exploration. Here’s how long it takes.
How Long Is The Main Story?
The campaign consists of22 individual chapters, although some are shorter or longer than others, depending on whether they focus on narrative exposition, flying your dragon around larger locations, or walking through battlefields in control of a giant mech. Sometimes you’ll be encouraged to explore away from the beaten path, while others will only provide a single route forward.
In terms of actual time, however, our review playthrough took us 13 hours to clear the single-player campaign, which is roughly the same as Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal if you’re not hunting down for every single hidden secret or playing on a higher difficulty.
The Dark Ages is also notably easier than both previous entries, withfewer challenging boss fights or optional encountersto partake in, meaning you’re not going to run into combat scenarios you have trouble surpassing.
Your average playthrough time will differ depending on the difficulty setting and how long you are going to spend exploring each and every stage, but with how The Dark Ages is built, it’s hard to see this extending the overall count by more than a couple of hours.
How Long Does It Take To Achieve 100 Percent Completion?
Doom: The Dark Ages has anincredibly generous chapter selection screenthat allows you to jump back into parts of the game you’ve already played without losing overall progress.
If you’ve hit credits and simply want to go back and pick up any and all remaining secrets or collectibles, that’s also a breeze. However, secrets are far easier to find than in Doom (2016) or Eternal, with many of them located right around corners or directly in front of you.
It doesn’t incentivize repeat playthroughs or take nearly as long to hit 100 percent completion; if you’re after everything, depending on difficulty settings, this will take your full playtime up to 16–20 hours.
What Collectibles Are There To Find?
You can findcollectible figurines, codex pages, weapon skins, rubies, and other rare stonesin Doom: The Dark Ages. However, there are no Slayer Gates or secret encounters, so you will have to settle for weapon and mastery challenges to put your skills to the test.
