As I write this article,Grounded 2has been out for one day. Also, it’s an early access release. Focus on these two factors as you get a load of this: it’s already very nearly eclipsed 50,000 concurrent players onSteam.
Now, without context, a number’s just a number, regardless of how big it might be. What makes 50,000 such an epic achievement, you might ask? Because Grounded 2 has positively smashedGrounded’s own CCU in a matter of hours. In a world where folks love to obsess over this particular metric, it’s worth a second glance to see a sequel so swiftly, and so thoroughly surpass its predecessor’s head count.
One Huge Step For Obsidian
Let’s start with a straightforward comparison: Grounded hita peak CCU of 32,012four years ago. That’s relatively robust stuff, I’d say. Grounded 2, on the other hand, has already struck gold witha peak CCU of 49,836. If Grounded 2 follows common trends, its upcoming first weekend should handily outrank that feat, too.
Sometimes, a nice leap from original to sequel can be owed at least in part to the fact that the first game didn’t launch on PC until after a console debut. That’s precisely what happened whenFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirthachieveda relatively mighty 40,571despite taking several months to make the leap from PS5 to PC; it would have done all the better if Windows got Cloud’s second chapter right alongside Sony. But compare that with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which only managed 13,803. What changed? The PC version cameconsiderablyfaster for Rebirth than it had for Remake.
I digress. The point is, that’snotthe case with Grounded 2. The original Grounded didn’t take its time with a PC version.Obsidian Entertainment’s groundbreaking (heh) miniature-world adventure title came to Xbox One, Xbox Series, and Windows from the get-go. What’s happened, then, is that Grounded has planted its franchise roots in our minds over the course of the three years since its 2022 launch, culminating in a fancy inaugural moment for itsbigger and bettersuccessor.
Earlier this week, Obsidian pulled the tarp off of ajam-packed roadmap for upcoming content, so the tiny explorers of Brookhaven Park should have an exciting time ahead of them as Grounded 2 continues to grow and evolve.
