It looks like there’s a very good reason why the rumouredGod of Warprequel game wasn’t shown at the most recentState of Play, as it’s reportedly been delayed into 2026.
As is a Summer tradition, last week was one of the busiest in some time for gaming news.PlayStation and Xbox both had their own dedicated showcases, whileSummer Game Fest offered up a ton of announcementsranging across every console. Out of all of the showcases, PlayStation’s State of Play wasarguably the biggest thanks to a ton of exciting reveals and first looks.
One game thatwasn’tat the most recent State of Play that we all expected to see something from, though, was the rumoured God of War Metroidvania starring that apparently stars Deimos. This prequel project, set in the series' Greek period, was heavily talked about before the showcase, but ended up being a no-show. There might be a good reason why, though.
God Of War Prequel Reportedly Delayed To 2026
Guess That Explains The Summer No-Show
As pointed out by Insider Gaming, the update on the still-unannounced God of War game comes from Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb, who took part in the latest episode of The Last of the Nintendogs. Although the episode mostly talked about Nintendo’s slate of games (including Donkey Kong Bananza), Grubb did take a second to discuss PlayStation’s 2026.
While talking about games that could potentially end up on theSwitch 2, Grubb noted that he thinksMarathon could be one of the games considered. Alongside that, Grubb noted that the “unannounced new God of War Greek project” could come to the Switch 2, and that he’s heard that it’s been pushed into 2026 alongsideMarathon.
I have Marathon and the unannounced new God of War Greek project, which I heard was pushed into 2026 as well. - Jeff Grubb
If this is true, then it would explain why the game wasn’t shown off by PlayStation during the most recent State of Play. Despite reportedly being much smaller scale than most God of War fans might expect, it makes sense that it wouldn’t get shown off until it’s closer to release, which apparently isn’t going to be this year. From the sounds of it, though, it was at least planned for 2025 at some point.
