WhenGhost of Yoteiwasrevealed nearly one year ago as a pseudo-sequeltoGhost of Tsushima, there was one thing that stood out immediately from the reveal trailer — Jin Sakai was nowhere to be found. With Yotei taking place over 300 years after the events of Tsushima, it became increasingly clear that Sakai would not return to the franchise, largely because he’s dead.
Still, that hasn’t stopped fans of the budding series from imagining any which way that Jin could return, including via reincarnation. Now,Sucker Punchhas come out in front of any speculation to quickly put those ideas to bed.
Let’s Be Real, The Wolf Being Jin Is Actually A Rather Novel Idea
To preface, apparently some Ghost of Tsushima fans are convinced that the wolf companion that has been part of several trailers, alongside Yotei’s protagonist, Atsu, is actually the reincarnation of Jin. Sadly, that doesn’t seem like it’ll be the case when Yotei launches later this year.
In speaking with Game Informer, co-creative director Jason Connell said, “I love our fans [laughs]. They’re so creative. I love it.”
Specifically, speaking about the narrative ties between Jin and Atsu, Nate Fox, the other co-creative director, shared that Yotei is essentially its own game with its own story. “It is a spiritual sequel,” Fox explained. “You don’t need to have played Ghost of Tsushima to jump right into Ghost of Yotei.”
That statement echoes previous information about Yotei, specifically that the “Ghost” part of the title is an idea that can be passed on between generations and live on throughout history. “Her reputation precedes her,” Fox said. “In this way, it’s similar, but it’s very much its own story.”
So, while Jin isn’t the wolf companion, and likely won’t have a direct connection to the story, his reputation does exist in the larger world. There’s also a good chance we’ll get some Jin-themed outfits, so it’s not like he’ll be completely absent.
