In a rather interesting twist,Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the 2023Nintendo Switchexclusive, is seemingly unplayable on the recently releasedNintendo Switch 2after a new firmware update. It is the latest development inwhat has quickly become a rather controversial situation with Switch 2 owners who prefer physical games media.
As first reported by GamesRadar, the organization “Does it play?“has discovered that Nintendo has seemingly disabled offline playability for Wonderfollowing the Switch 2’s latest firmware update (20.2.0). Other first party games seemingly work, save for Wonder.
In a follow-up posted to Bluesky, the group, which aims to report on whether a game can be played completely offline without the need for any sort of additional downloads, said Nintendo “crossed a line.”
“This is another attack on physical media,” the group wrote in part.
Interestingly enough, this isn’t the first Switch 2-related game story involving Nintendo and unstated communication to happen this week.
Beyond Apparently “Deliberately” Blocking Wonder, Nintendo Can Also Revoke Games, Too
Earlier this week,a Switch 2 user found out first-hand that Nintendo can and will “revoke” a game that has been bundled with the system. They learned that after returning their system, which was bundled with Mario Kart World, that the new system wouldn’t let them download the game outright. Instead, they were required to go to the Settings menu to claim back the game that they had purchased with the system.
That’s because the game is seemingly tied to the console itself and not your actual user account, making things all the more confusing when it comes to ownership. Throw in the whole Game Key Card situation, and things have not been exactly smooth.
