Larian Studios just rolled out Hotfix 33 forBaldur’s Gate 3, finally addressing a glaring issue withthe Dark Urge questlinewhere they could potentially spoil their own twist.
If you haven’t dabbled in their more morbid playthrough yet, the Dark Urge is an amnesiac whose true identity isn’t supposed to be revealed until Act 3, giving them a unique mystery that sets them apart from Tav and other Origin characters. All you know up until that point is thatsomethingis gnawing at them to be the worst person imaginable, whether that meanstorturing Nettie’s bird or ripping Gale’s hand off.
Unlike The Dark Urge, I don’t want to ruin the reveal for you. So, fair warning, spoilers ahead.
It’s only towards the end of the game, upon meeting Sceleritas Fel, when you discover that the Dark Urge isBhaalspawn, and are tasked with slaughtering the last of their bloodline — Orin included. It’s a thrilling moment that connects all of the dots brilliantly, and is best experienced blind, but unfortunately, that’s not how it went for a lot of players.
Larian Tells The Dark Urge To Shut Up
In earlier acts, for whatever reason, the Dark Urge could invoke the name of their father, Bhaal, even though they’re not supposed to have any memory of him. Thankfully, after months of badgering from the community, Larian has finally made sure the Dark Urge shuts up and remains oblivious until the big reveal.
“Told the Dark Urge, everyone’s favourite amnesiac, to stop talking about people ‘back home’ (you don’t know where that is yet, bestie) and stop spoiling the game by mentioning their ‘father’, among other silly notions, in their overhead dialogues,” the patch notes read.
It won’t undo the spoilers for anyone who had the twist ruined for them, but for new players giving the Dark Urge a try in their umpteenth replay, it’ll keep the mystery intact through to Act 3.
The other major highlight of this update is that it addresses a bug with larger mods, where they would run into the ‘A task was cancelled’ pop-up. “Increased the timeout when trying to publish large mods to help prevent the error,” the patch notes explain.
Larian has also resolved a split-screen softlock where “if Player 2 disconnects while Player 1 is in an active dice roll during dialogue, Player 1 would get stuck”, while ironing out a few other kinks. You can read the full list of fixes here.
