Final Fantasy Tacticsscript writer Yasumi Matsuno has said thatThe Ivalice Chronicles' themes are going to hit just as hard since the world hasn’t got any better since the game originally released 30 years ago.

As everyone who has been begging for a remake or remaster is well aware of, one of the mostmemorable aspects of Final Fantasy Tactics is its core message and themes. Tactics is all about the conflict between classes and a desire to better the world, something that the game’s developers have highlighted on numerous occasions.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

The heavy political themes of Final Fantasy Tactics were written for the game when it released all the way back in 1997, but they’re still painfully relevant today. In fact, they mighthit even harder in The Ivalice Chronicles considering everything that’s going on in the world, something that the game’s script writer has even pointed out.

Depressingly, Final Fantasy Tactics Might Be More Relevant Now Than Nearly 30 Years Ago

What A Cheery Thought

As pointed out by VGC, Final Fantasy Tactics' original script and scenario writer, Yasumi Matsuno, recently spoke to Denfaminicogamer about the upcoming remaster. During the chat, Matsuno said (according to Google translate) that the game’s themes are arguably going to hit harder now since the world hasn’t really changed for the better since 1997.

Matsuno pointed out that Tactics was made almost 30 years ago, and that there were “many economic and political problems”, particularly in Japan. Tactics highlighted the class struggles that were going on in the world, but Matsuno said that “30 years have passed since then, and the environment surrounding the world has not changed”.

To make matters even more soberingly depressing, Matsuno pointed out that he had hoped things would be better by now, but that “nothing has changed”. In fact, he thinks that things might have even been better in the ’90s when Final Fantasy Tactics first released. He couldn’t be more right.

Economic disparity remains the same and, in terms of division, the situation is not good at all. - Yasumi Matsuno

While Matsuno’s statement is spot-on, he does at least think that willmake the Ivalice Chronicles hit just as hard in 2025 as it did in 1997. He noted that he would be “delighted” if those who hadn’t played the game gave it a go now it’s been remastered, although it sounds like you’ll get quite the reality check if you do.
